Jay Duplass is heading to San Luis Obispo.
The seasoned all-around talent will be in the limelight at the upcoming San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (also known as SLO Film Fest), where he is scheduled to collect a special award and showcase his latest production, titled “The Baltimorons“.
Following its premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas, the film titled “The Baltimorons” unfolds the tale of how a man, recently sober, finds himself in an unexpected romantic entanglement with his elderly dentist after an emergency dental issue arises on Christmas Eve. The cast includes Michael Strassner, Liz Larsen, and Olivia Luccardi. Duplass directs this film, having co-written the script with Strassner. “The Baltimorons” represents Duplass’ first feature film he both wrote and directed since 2012’s “The Do-Deca-Penathlon“. Over the years, he has been actively involved in television production, directing episodes for shows like “Togetherness, Search Party “, and “Somebody Somewhere“, as well as producing and executive producing numerous films and TV series.
Skye McLennan, the head of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, expressed great admiration as we honor a renowned figure in the independent film community. For years, Jay Duplass and his brother Mark Duplass have been esteemed pioneers and innovators in the realm of indie cinema.
Duplass’ moment under the limelight is set for April 27, where he will be honored with awards, screen his work “The Baltimorons”, and engage in a Q&A session about his career.
The festival takes place from April 24th to the 29th, showcasing over 113 films spanning narrative features, shorts, documentaries, and doc shorts. Kicking off the SLO Film Festival is the screening of the Sundance Film Festival’s Audience Award winner, DJ Ahmet, followed by Daryl Hannah’s documentary on Neil Young’s solo tour, Coastal. Notable highlights include a program dedicated to the late David Lynch and his interest in meditation, curated by Coastal Awakening, as well as Ecologistics, a series focusing on environmental documentaries.
In the early 2000s, Duplass honed his skills in the entertainment industry by simultaneously writing, directing, and producing independent and studio films alongside his brother Mark. Their collaborative work includes movies like “The Puffy Chair,” “Baghead,” and “Cyrus,” as well as “Jeff, Who Lives at Home.” They also jointly developed the series “Togetherness” under an exclusive contract with HBO.
2014 saw Jay and Mark launching the critically praised TV series “Togetherness”, as part of a broader deal with HBO that led to numerous shows and series. This duo also created the Emmy-winning Netflix documentary series “Wild Wild Country”. On screen, he’s featured in prominent roles such as “Industry”, “Transparent”, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”, “The Chair”, “Outside In” and “Beatriz at Dinner”.
