Jay Ellis Set to Star in ‘Duke & Roya’ Off-Broadway Opposite Stephanie Nur

This coming summer, a fresh stage production featuring Jay Ellis from “Insecure” and Stephanie Nur will make its debut off the main Broadway stage.

The stage production titled “Duke & Roya” is penned by Charles Randolph-Wright, the same author behind “Blue“. In the producer’s seat for this project are Get Lifted Film Co.’s John Legend, Mike Jackson, and Ty Stiklorius. Notably, Warren Adams, fresh from directing “Superhero” Off-Broadway, will helm this production as well.

The play titled “Duke & Roya” will commence its performance at the Lucille Lortel Theatre from June 10, with the opening show scheduled for June 24. The theatre has planned for the production to continue for a span of 11 weeks.

Duke and Roya’s Love Story unfolds as they, an American hip-hop artist named Duke and Roya, an Afghan interpreter, find each other in Kabul. As they attempt to maneuver their budding romance amidst the contrasting realities of their distinct backgrounds, they share a tale that explores their connection.

Besides Ellis and Nur, Duke & Roya will also feature Noma Dumezweni, a winner of the Olivier Award and a Tony nominee. She previously acted in the original Broadway cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, as well as in the TV shows Only Murders in the Building and Presumed Innocent. Additionally, Dariush Kashani will join them, having appeared on Broadway in Oslo and The Band’s Visit.

Ellis is particularly recognized for portraying Lawrence in HBO’s hit show “Insecure.” Lately, he has been seen in Mindy Kaling’s Netflix series titled “Running Wild,” and also featured in the film “Top Gun: Maverick.

In the first season of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series titled “Lioness,” Nur made an appearance. She is also scheduled to star alongside Anthony Hopkins in the upcoming Netflix and DJ Caruso production, the Biblical period drama named “Mary.

Laura Ivey, Janet Brenner and Smada Media are also producers of the play.
