As a cinephile with a penchant for films that challenge societal norms and shed light on overlooked stories, I find Jayro Bustamante‘s work to be nothing short of captivating. His latest masterpiece, “Rita,” is a haunting testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.
As a filmmaker with a passion for truth, I, Jayro Bustamante, was resolute in shedding light on one of the most distressing chapters in contemporary Guatemalan history through my latest creation, “Rita.” I knew there might be resistance from the government, but the story needed to be told. This hauntingly surreal tale follows 13-year-old Rita (Giuliana Santa Cruz), a girl who flees her indifferent home, only to find herself in an oppressive state-run orphanage – a place that tragically mirrors the real-life institution where, in March 2017, 56 low-income girls and adolescents were engulfed in flames. Forty-one of them perished, while 15 managed to survive. Reports of sexual abuse and potential trafficking within this home had long been circulating, casting a shadow over the institution’s dark past.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my appreciation for Guzmán Bustamante, the mastermind behind the chilling 2019 movie “La Llorona” – a film that now graces The Criterion Collection. In a captivating interview with MovieWeb, this visionary filmmaker shared his intention to present the narrative in an unconventional manner, leaving a lasting impression on viewers. This is why you’ll notice angelic wings adorning the girls and the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that permeates the movie.
The approach we took seemed to be a fitting way to narrate the story… It was more authentic since it mirrored the actual events, resonated with the girls, and aligned with their unique storytelling styles… In many of the institutions where we sought data, we uncovered that such catalogs actually exist… These institutions used costumes as a means to sell the girls. This reveals a duality: there’s always some light aspect and a dark side to discover.
The Responsibility to Tell Truthful & Impactful Stories
Jayro Bustamante skillfully blends enchanting mysticism with raw realism in this film. Central to the story is an exceptional portrayal by Giuliana Santa Cruz. Upon entering the orphanage, Rita’s very presence initially sparks hope among the girls who are imprisoned there, as they believe that a foretold prophecy – possibly even a divine messenger – may appear to free them from their suffering.
On previous occasions, the filmmaker has delved into profound themes. He received critical acclaim — including a Golden Globes nomination — for “La Llorona“, a movie that centers around an aging and paranoid war criminal protected by his loyal wife. As he nears death, this man is tormented by the specters of his past.
The movie also had an otherworldly ambiance, a trait Rita Bustamante often incorporates in her creative endeavors. In essence, she expressed that she seeks narratives… and believes we possess the ability, but also the duty to use it constructively. If our work fosters greater empathy within people, she added, society will be enriched by this positive change. Rita is currently available on Shudder for streaming.
