Jeff Bridges Hates His De-Aged Tron: Legacy Character

Jeff Bridges Hates His De-Aged Tron: Legacy Character

As a devoted fan of Jeff Bridges‘ illustrious career, I find myself both amazed and amused by his experiences with the Tron franchise. The three-time Academy Award winner is set to make history by appearing in all three Tron movies, but his least favorite character has to be the de-aged version of Clu from Tron: Legacy.

Jeff Bridges is expected to feature in all three Tron films once Tron: Ares comes out, a role he enjoyed on every production but found his digitally de-aged character from Tron: Legacy less appealing. In the 2010 sequel, Bridges portrayed two roles, Kevin Flynn and his corrupted digital counterpart Clu. To distinguish them, Clu was digitally aged backward to reflect Bridges’ appearance in the first movie. At that time, digital de-aging was still developing, resulting in less flattering depictions of the actor.

In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jeff Bridges talked about his experience working on Tron: Legacy, where he underwent digital de-aging. With today’s advanced A.I., even deceased actors are being recreated using similar technology. When asked if this idea was unsettling considering there were 3D scans of him in existence, Bridges, as calm and collected as The Big Lebowski character he played, expressed his thoughts on the matter.

“This is the latest trend. In case I get an opportunity, I’ll be renting out my likeness. I could easily respond with, ‘Go ahead!’

Jeff Bridges currently has a favorable view towards the process of digital scanning, and he recalls the outcome in ‘Tron: Legacy’. During a humorous moment, he playfully compared the de-aged version of his character to a well-known political commentator. In simpler terms, Bridges jokingly remarked that his digitally-altered self resembled a famous political commentator.

They scanned me, and now I’m stored digitally until the Tron [Legacy] movie. Frankly, I didn’t care much for how they portrayed me in that film. It seemed more like Bill Maher to me rather than a true representation of myself.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’d say that “Tron” stands out as one of the most groundbreaking and impactful sci-fi films from the ’80s, with its dazzling color palette symbolizing Kevin Flynn’s digital world. Interestingly enough, this movie was initially filmed in black and white, and the colors were meticulously added during post-production by hand. Reflecting on the original “Tron”, Jeff Bridges recounted the strange sensation of filming it, expressing how unusual it felt at the time. The actor put it eloquently when he said:

Wow, that was quite unusual! Since nothing like this had ever been attempted before, there was a sense of safety in its uniqueness because there’s no point of comparison. It simply exists. We filmed using 70mm black and white, hand-tinted by women in Korea. The sets were dark with white tape, while everyone wore vibrant clothes against the monochrome backdrop. Our costumes were also black. Yet, stepping outside after a day’s work would be like a burst of color hitting you. It was truly delightful.

Acting legend Jeff Bridges is gearing up to rejoin the world of Tron for the final installment of the trilogy, titled Tron: Ares. Directed by Joachim Rønning, this movie also boasts an impressive cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Evan Peters, Gillian Anderson, Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Jodie Turner-Smith.

Tron: Ares
is set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025.
