Jelly Roll’s Fire Country Season 3 Role, Explained

Contains spoilers for “Fire Country” Season 3, Episodes 17 — “Fire and Ice”

Due to Walter Leone (Jeff Fahey) being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the Leone family has found themselves in a challenging situation lately, requiring some direction. After initial hesitation from Vince (Billy Burke), they have decided to move Walter into a care facility. However, during Vince’s visits, his father fails to recognize him, causing distress. Enter Noah (Jason “Jelly Roll” DeFord), an employee at the care facility, who steps in to help Vince connect with Walter amidst his confusion and illness. This role demands a great deal of emotional depth from DeFord, as it marks his first appearance on the show.

In an unconventional manner, Max Thieriot, co-executive producer of “Fire Country” and playing Bode Leone, shared how the singer landed his role. During the 2024 CMT Awards, they crossed paths in a restroom: Thieriot was entering as DeFord was exiting, drying his hands. When asked about liking the series, Thieriot thanked him for allowing the use of his music on the show. In response, DeFord expressed his enthusiasm for the show and even shared that he had been campaigning online to be a part of it. Impressed by DeFord’s fervor for “Fire Country,” Thieriot offered to help get him on the drama. Although there was some doubt about whether DeFord was serious, he ultimately fulfilled his promise.

DeFord shared with ETOnline that he was confirming the essence of the story, mentioning, “It’s classic Hollywood – I was approached about this series in a restroom.” However, there’s an intriguing difference between his account and Thieriot’s regarding how they met.

Jelly Roll’s version of the story is a little different from Max Thieriot’s

Initially, Max Thieriot claimed that Jason “Jelly Roll” DeFord expressed his admiration for “Fire Country” during their encounter. However, in an interview with ETOnline, DeFord clarified that he hadn’t watched the series until after meeting Thieriot at the CMTs. Upon returning home, he felt compelled to watch it and became hooked just like everyone else. Now being a fan of the show, he eagerly sought the role he had previously discussed with Thieriot.

Initially unsure about the show or not, DeFord was thrilled to take on a character that didn’t necessitate him to sing. In an interview with ET, he expressed, “I felt it was crucial for me to play a part that offered emotional release but wasn’t musical.” His enthusiasm particularly stemmed from portraying a reformed convict rather than someone striving for freedom. Moreover, he expressed his ambition to enhance his acting skills, aiming to collaborate with Jonah Hill and even pursue an antagonist role.

In the TV show “Fire Country,” Jelly Roll’s character doesn’t sing onscreen, but instead expresses emotions. Simultaneously, a new song of his titled “Dreams Don’t Die” was released to coincide with his appearance. However, the role of Noah is entirely non-musical and may offer a chance for his character to return in future seasons. As Noah has befriended the Leone family, continues working at the facility, and the factory owned by Walter will likely play a significant role throughout Season 3, including the climactic two-part finale.

Season 3 will put Walter in danger — will Noah be there?

In the Season 3 finale, two episodes titled “A Change in the Wind” and “I’ll Do It Again,” a fire poses a threat to Walter’s care home and Three Rock’s safety. However, you might not see much of Noah during this event because his tour schedule with Post Malone is getting busier, particularly over the summer as they embark on a stadium tour.

There’s a strong possibility that the well-known artist, Noah, could make a return to the series in Season 4. DeFord expressed this hope to ET Online. However, whether his schedule and the future state of Walter’s care facility in Season 3 permit this is yet to be determined. In the meantime, fans of Jelly Roll can appreciate the musician’s debut acting performance.
