Jenna Ortega Reveals She Deleted Twitter After Receiving Explicit AI Images of Herself as a Teen: “It’s Disgusting”

As a concerned observer and admirer of Jenna Ortega‘s talent and resilience, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy towards her harrowing experiences with artificial intelligence and social media. The fact that a 12-year-old girl had to confront such disturbing content and unsolicited messages is nothing short of appalling.

Jenna Ortega is sharing insights into her own encounters with the harmful aspects of AI technology.

In a recent chat on the podcast “The Interview” for The New York Times, the actress who plays Wednesday shared an unsettling experience she had on social media when she was a teenager, which caused her to close her Twitter (now called X) account.

“As a concerned user, I can’t stand AI. Back when I was just 14, I was forced to create a Twitter account, and what followed was the distressing discovery of inappropriately edited content featuring me as a child. This is downright horrifying, corrupt, and morally wrong.”

Apart from encountering explicit AI-created images resembling herself during her teen years, she shared that the first direct message she ever opened at age 12 was an unwanted picture of a male’s private parts, marking the start of a series of similar experiences.

“Ortega shared that he once had a Twitter account, to which someone advised, ‘You really should do it, it’s important for your public persona.’ Eventually, he decided to delete it approximately two to three years ago. The overwhelming attention after the release of his show ‘Wednesday’ brought in many unrealistic images and photos that left him bewildered, so he chose to remove the account.”

As a fervent admirer, I can share that the actress from “Beetlejuice Beetlejean” voiced her discomfort over some unsettling images she encountered, stating they left her feeling “unpleasant” and “uneasy.” Her reasoning for erasing them was straightforward: “I couldn’t respond without being confronted by such imagery. One day, I simply awoke with the realization that I no longer needed this burden. So, I decided to let go of it.”

At twenty-one years old, Ortega acknowledges that she’s still mastering self-protection, particularly given her profession that keeps many watchful eyes. A strategy she finds effective is minimizing her phone usage as much as possible.

“She mentioned that she’s frequently out for walks. If anyone wonders where she is, her parents included, when she’s not at work or in a meeting, chances are she’s outside, perhaps doing laps around the park. She might be found lounging in a nearby garden or taking a snooze in a grassy field.”

The actress from “Scream VI” expressed, “I’m making a conscious effort to stop being overly critical of myself or dwelling excessively on minor issues. In light of global events and news, these troubles seem insignificant. I should be enjoying myself more, having so much fun! Yet, I’m not. I should be. I try to remind myself of this frequently.”
