The show “Wednesday” catapulted Jenna Ortega into stardom, reaching an entirely new crowd for her. However, it seems that she isn’t entirely content with how events unfolded.
In a recent interview, Ortega admitted, “I was so shocked by it all that I didn’t fully understand [the fame]. I still don’t.” She continued, “To put it bluntly, following the show and sorting everything out, I wasn’t a very happy person. After dealing with the pressure, the attention – as someone who’s quite reserved, that was so overwhelming and so terrifying.
Ortega often grappled with being treated as a serious adult due to her well-known role as a schoolgirl. “It’s almost like being stuck in that schoolgirl costume,” she explained. “There’s an air of condescension about it. And when you’re petite, people literally look down on you… If girls don’t maintain the exact image they had at first, people say ‘Oh, something’s off. She’s changed. She must have sold her soul.’
As a humble movie enthusiast, I often ponder about my connection with the audience. On one hand, I yearn to repay their support and love. Yet, on the other, I crave for creative endeavors that resonate deeply within me.
Ortega Got Bad Press Over One Comment
After achieving fame, Ortega’s journey hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. A significant incident related to Wednesday took place in 2023, as she revealed on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard. “I don’t think I’ve ever had to assert myself more on a set than I did on Wednesday,” she said. “There was a line about a dress she has to wear for a school dance, and she says, ‘Oh my god, I love it. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ I had to step in and say, ‘No.’ There were instances on that set where I even crossed the line into being almost unprofessional, modifying lines as needed.
Ortega’s remarks sparked anger among some people. Later in the same year, during a writer’s strike, a sign was displayed that read, “‘Without writers, Jenna Ortega will have nothing to make fun of!’“. It’s not surprising if Ortega became disillusioned with the entertainment industry after encountering such hostility.
In her Harper’s Bazaar interview, she didn’t explicitly discuss those specific incidents, but she subtly hinted at experiencing bullying. She expressed feeling “extremely misinterpreted,” and further added, “It seems that being a bully is currently fashionable. Being on the receiving end of gossip was an eye-opening experience for me.
Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 will debut on Netflix on August 6.
