As an admirer of Jenna Ortega‘s meteoric rise to stardom, I must say her journey is nothing short of inspiring. Her near-miss with the iconic sci-fi franchise Dune only serves to highlight her potential and versatility as an actress. If she had landed the role of Chani in Dune, we might have lost her to the vast expanse of space operas!
Jenna Ortega’s fame has skyrocketed in recent times due to her leading roles in popular series like Scream, Wednesday, and soon Beetlejuice (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice). However, the actress reminisces about almost being part of a massive sci-fi franchise – Dune. Jenna Ortega is slated to appear in Tim Burton’s much-anticipated sequel for Beetlejuice. After her memorable portrayal in Wednesday, Ortega has been identified with gothic roles. Had she landed the role she auditioned for years ago, the actress might have established herself as a fixture in contemporary sci-fi films.
Jenna Ortega had a chat with Buzzfeed for the Puppy Interview regarding her part in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, sharing the screen with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci. In this discussion, Jenna Ortega shared that she auditioned for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune back in 2016. The actress mentioned the audition process was mysterious, as she wasn’t explicitly told which character she was trying out for. Nevertheless, Ortega suspects she read for the Chani role, which eventually landed on Zendaya. The actress stated:
“At around fifteen, I tried out for the role in Dune. I vividly recall being quite enamored with the movie and its series, and eagerly anticipating it as Denis is among my preferred directors. I believe it might have been Chani, Zendaya’s character, but they didn’t reveal that information yet. Everything was kept under wraps.”
Although Jenna Ortega didn’t get the role in Dune, she has secured a part in another highly anticipated sci-fi adaptation – Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun, directed by Taika Waititi. This film is set to hit theaters in 2025, with Amy Adams, Natasha Lyonne, Simon Baker, and Davida McKenzie also starring.
Jenna Ortega Got a Beetlejuice Welcome on Set of the Upcoming Sequel
Jenna Ortega finds no cause for regret when reflecting on her possible part in the Dune production, as she is now part of one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2024. In the upcoming movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ortega portrays Astrid Deetz, the daughter of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder). The long-awaited sequel, which has been in production for 36 years, brings the Deetz family back to Winter River following a family tragedy. When Astrid unearths a model town in the family’s attic and sarcastically invokes Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), chaos ensues. After the mischievous spirit kidnaps her and transports her to the afterlife, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara) embark on a perilous mission to rescue Astrid.
Keaton’s captivating personality as Beetlejuice significantly contributed to the enduring popularity of the original film. Jenna Ortega recalls her initial encounter with Keaton in character, and he extended a characteristic Beetlejuice greeting. Ortega shared:
“He came up behind me. I was getting a hair and makeup test, and I got a tap on the shoulder and I turned around and it was a jump scare for sure. He was like, ‘Oh hey I’m Michael,’ and he had molds peeling off his face. I played it cool, and then it was cool until I met him for a second time out of hair and makeup because I introduced myself again because I forgot that I had already met him.”
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
releases in theaters on September 6, 2024.
