Jennifer Carpenter made her brief introduction this week on 1923.
The second installment of Taylor Sheridan’s prequel series to Yellowstone, resumes with Teonna Rainwater, the Native girl who fled an abusive boarding school in Montana (played by Aminah Nieves), continuing her journey marked by deadly encounters. She’s now on the run from a determined head priest (Sebastian Roché) and a marshal (Jamie McShane) mounted on horseback, hot on her trail.
In Anadarko, Oklahoma, Father Renaud (Roché) and Marshal Kent (McShane) find Teonna. Upon meeting with the local marshal, they’re surprised to discover she’s a woman. It’s then that they encounter Mamie Fossett, portrayed by Jennifer Carpenter from the upcoming series “1923”, set in the early 20th century.
When Kent doubts her capability to uphold the badge due to her being a woman, she swiftly counters his doubt. “You’re out patrolling this area, issuing warrants, making arrests – why would I find that hard to believe?” he inquires. “Because you’re prejudiced,” she retorts, “living in the past.” She cautions him to be careful, “This isn’t the Old West.
The actor portrays pioneering character Mamie Fossett, modeled after the actual deputy marshal by the same name. Unfortunately, not many accounts exist about Fossett, who was among the handful of women serving as deputies in that region during that period.
Delving into Mamie Fossett’s real-life story, I uncovered approximately ten intriguing sentences,” I shared with The Hollywood Reporter regarding our preparations for season two of 1923. “It seems she ventured to this region with dreams of homesteading, but circumstances didn’t allow it. Instead, she joined the U.S. Marshals service, not to be confined behind a desk, but to venture into the territory and wrestle the criminals out – a role that was among the most dangerous in those times. Starting from this framework of her character gave us a solid foundation.
The carpenter additionally studied the advancements showcased on the series dating from the late 1800s to the early 1920s, such as toasters and vacuum cleaners. She comments, “I’m not certain if Mamie owned those items, but in the places where all the flappers dwelled, I doubt it,” she says. Furthermore, she read ‘Empire of the Summer Moon’ by S.C. Gwynne and admitted that she ended up reading the entirety of ‘Lonesome Dove’ by Larry McMurtry. “I intended only to sample it, but my goodness, what a captivating story,” she said.
Before you even get there, your mind paints a picture of the texture, the scents, the sensations, and the brambles beneath your feet. But upon arrival, you discover that all that work has already been done – the writing on the page is effortlessly vivid,” she says, expressing her feelings about Sheridan’s writing. “It was the most tranquil and fertile experience I’ve ever had in writing, akin to the best acting dreams I had as an 8-year-old when I first declared my ambition.
Actress who gained recognition through her role on “Dexter” and its revival series “Dexter: New Blood” as Detective Deb Morgan, sister to the character played by Michael C. Hall, expresses her eagerness to portray Fossett. She admits, “I grabbed it. I desired it like I haven’t wanted anything in a long time.” However, once she received the news that she would be given the opportunity, fear set in. Fortunately, there was ample time before filming began, so most of her preparation was due to her apprehension. She then learned that the cast and crew of “1923” are a supportive, inviting group, making it easy to give her best performance as everyone was willing to help if she stumbled.
The principal cast from the 1923 series are reprising their roles, as the second season picks up where the story left off in the first season of Sheridan’s saga. 1923 focuses on a new generation of Dutton elders, who are forebears to the Duttons seen in Yellowstone, following on from the prequel series, 1883. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren portray Jacob and Cara Dutton, the Duttons who took over the Yellowstone ranch after the untimely deaths of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) in 1883. Since the season one finale, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and his wife Alex Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) have been apart, while Spencer’s nephew Jack (Darren Mann) and Liz Dutton (Michelle Randolph) remain in Montana to assist Jacob and Cara with running the ranch during the harsh Montana winter.
Currently, Teonna’s narrative is distinct from the primary Dutton family, but there may be a future encounter between them as hinted by Carpenter. Regarding Fossett and Teonna, Carpenter stated, “She is in the area I’m guarding. So we might cross paths, in an authentic way.” In the season preview, it appears that Fossett will encounter Spencer at some point during his return journey home.
Additionally, she hinted at a grand finale for season two, a conclusion that showrunner Sheridan has been developing since the inception of the series. However, Paramount+ has yet to make an official announcement regarding whether season two will mark the conclusion of the entire series.
As a gamer, I’ve played through the finale like everyone else, but when I got a sneak peek at an early version, it wasn’t just watching – it was living it. The emotions, raw and unfiltered, gushed out from me, leaving me breathless and unable to hold them back. It felt like the episode had happened to me personally. Just thinking about how the audience will experience this masterpiece makes my excitement soar. This is some of the most generous, innovative filmmaking I’ve seen in ages. Being a part of this project is an honor beyond words.
Currently, Paramount+ is broadcasting the initial installments of Season 2 for the series “1923”, and fresh episodes will be available each Sunday.
