The show, “The White Lotus,” extends an invitation to a realm brimming with drama, extravagant wealth, and black humor. Each season unfolds at the luxurious White Lotus resort – initially in Hawaii and later in Sicily – where an assortment of intriguing characters gather for their vacations. Among these personalities, Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya stands out as the most unforgettable, chaotic, and extraordinary.
Each line spoken by Tanya is precious, a combination of superb writing and Coolidge’s exceptional acting prowess. It seems unlikely that anyone else could have brought such humor, pathos, and authenticity to the role. Sadly, her character departed in Season 2, prompting us to pay tribute to Coolidge and Tanya by sharing some of our favorite lines.

“I’m my own phallic mother… I’m my own vaginal father.”
Season 1, Episode 1 – “Arrivals”
As soon as Tanya stepped into the White Lotus, she yearned for a massage right away. Fortunately, Belinda (portrayed by Natasha Rothwell) found some time to accommodate her, and as the massage commenced, Belinda asked Tanya to mimic her words. At first, there was nothing unusual about this instruction, but when Belinda brought up her mother with distinctly phallic connotations, both Tanya and the audience were left scratching our heads in bewilderment.
Only Gets Funnier
Tanya’s repeated phrase about her ‘vaginal father’ seems more puzzling than the previous one, but she continues due to her faith in Belinda. Even when some words are misused, she persists. Then, Belinda initiates a chant, and Tanya joins in. The entire scene is both cute and amusing. Coolidge’s delivery and confidence in Belinda truly make the lines convincing.

“She was always in search of male affection… she took her money and she manipulated people with it.”
Season 1, Episode 3 – “Mysterious Monkeys”
Initially, Tanya visited the White Lotus intending to scatter her mom’s remains. However, the endeavor turned out to be much more challenging than she anticipated. On a boat filled with listeners, Tanya delivered a speech on her mother and recounted instances where the woman had wronged her. Remarkably, several points she made about her mom could just as well describe Tanya herself.
Her Two Biggest Flaws
On numerous occasions throughout the series, Tanya appeared to exhibit a considerable level of self-understanding. However, during her discussion about her mother, it was clear that two significant flaws in her character mirrored her own: her tendency to become involved with emotionally distant men and her habit of purchasing others’ affection using money. Not only did these actions harm Tanya herself, but they also affected those she claimed to care for (or should have cared for), such as Belinda and Portia, portrayed by Haley Lu Richardson.

“At the core of the onion, Belinda, is just a straight-up alcoholic lunatic.”
Season 1, Episode 5 – “The Lotus-Eaters”
At the White Lotus, Tanya didn’t anticipate encountering love, but when she met Greg (Jon Gries), a deep affection swept over her. However, this wasn’t entirely a positive situation, as she confided in Belinda about her concern that he might only appreciate the surface aspects of her personality. As he got to know her better, she feared he would discover more and grow disenchanted, causing her to fret about losing his affections.
In this exchange, Belinda tried to reassure Tanya that there was no need for further games or deception. However, Tanya remained adamant and persisted in her belief. This led to Tanya expressing herself in a more emotional way: “I really want to reveal my intentions. I’m tired of playing poker. I just want to cut through all the complexity, go straight to the intense part, and just let things unfold naturally. In essence, I want to expose the heart of the matter, show him exactly what I’m made of.” Essentially, Tanya wanted to be honest and transparent about her feelings.
The Core of Tanya
During the same scene, Tanya chose to back up her statements and reveal her true feelings to Greg by unveiling the heart of the onion (symbolizing truth). She revealed her mother’s ashes to him, asking him to dispose of them, confessing her vulnerability and insecurity. Instead of being deterred, Greg showed interest, expressing his desire for intimacy. In retrospect, this wasn’t a romantic gesture, and considering the events of Season 2, we can’t help but wish he had declined her offer.
7
“Death… is the last immersive experience I haven’t tried.”
Season 1, Episode 6 – “Departures”
In my own words: The standout quote from the final episode of Season 1 is both poignant and chilling. Following Greg’s disclosure about his illness, he fears Tanya might reject him. However, unexpectedly, she admits, “Death is the one immersive experience I haven’t explored yet,” showing her eagerness to explore it. As we move into Season 2, this experience will be crossed off her bucket list, but not in the manner she anticipated.
Foreshadowing
Reflecting on Tanya’s passing, director Mike White poignantly recalled a particular line that encapsulated her story: it was a journey destined for an ending in death. In retrospect, this quote chills me as it subtly foreshadowed the tragic conclusion to her tale.
6
“I’m Monica Vitti!”
Season 2, Episode 2 – “Italian Dream”
In my opinion, it’s challenging to find a phrase as exuberantly expressed as “I am Monica Vitti.” This line is delivered by the character when Greg and Tanya are readying for their Vespa ride, an element of Tanya’s Italian dream. Regrettably, this scooter journey didn’t live up to the enchantment Tanya envisioned; she encountered a bug in her mouth, almost causing us to lose control. Yet, amidst these mishaps, it was a heartwarming instant where Tanya genuinely appreciated herself (despite Valentina’s Peppa Pig remark).
More of the Fantasy
In “The Italian Dream” episode, a line that later proved prophetic was introduced, “What a breathtaking sight! I sometimes wonder if anyone has ever leaped from here,” hinting at Tanya’s unfortunate fate to come. Moreover, this installment offered a glimpse into Tanya’s Italian escapade, which was innocent, straightforward, and filled with romantic undertones. The remainder of her fantasy unfolds thus:
As the sun dips below the horizon, we make our way to a particularly charming spot near the sea for an evening filled with romance. There, we indulge in an array of delicious aperitifs, followed by generous servings of pasta laden with succulent clams. We’re simply radiant with joy and elegance, a sight to behold.
5
“That’s the weirdest voice I’ve ever heard.”
Season 2, Episode 4 – “In the Sandbox”
In simpler terms, not all lines spoken by the character Tanya needed to be complex or profound to be impactful. Sometimes, she delivered witty one-liners that were multidimensional in their humor. For instance, during Season 2, episode 4, after encountering the beach greeter Salvatore, she quipped about his voice, which was unexpected and even a bit rude, but hilarious given Tanya’s own distinctive vocal qualities.
Always Speaking Her Mind
As a movie enthusiast, I’m known for speaking my mind without filter, whether it’s socially appropriate or not. This quirk of mine has led to some hilarious moments, like constantly interrupting Shane and Rachel’s dinners during Season 1, or taking jabs at Portia’s fashion choices in Season 2.
4
“Is that the Queen of Sicily?”
Season 2, Episode 5 – “That’s Amore”
In Season 2, Tanya encountered a man named Quentin (portrayed by Tom Hollander), who was gay. Their bond deepened swiftly. However, it was later unveiled that Quentin harbored sinister intentions towards her – he intended to take her life. Before making the move, Quentin desired to give her a memorable experience. Viewing Tanya as a pitiful character, he treated her to an opera performance. There, they found a stylish lady seated opposite them in a box seat. Eagerly, Tanya inquired if the woman was the Queen of Sicily.
Not the Queen of Sicily
Well, as a film enthusiast, I must admit, Sicily doesn’t boast a queen. The idea of this random woman becoming the monarch is indeed intriguing and worthy of its own investigation. Yet, we can’t help but rejoice that Quentin asked Tanya out. Her joy upon encountering royalty could even eclipse her glee from their Vespa adventure!
3
“These gays, they’re trying to murder me!”
Season 2, Episode 7 – “Arrivederci”
In the last episode of White Lotus, Season 2, Tanya learns that her newly acquired gay companions are supposedly hired by Greg to kill her. Overwhelmed, she rushes to the ship’s captain and confides in him about the plot, stating they plan to steal her husband’s money for decorating their homes or such trivial matters. However, the captain primarily speaks Italian, so he begins gesturing and speaking in Italian, leading Tanya to assume that he too is gay, implying he might be after her as well.
High-End Gays
As a fervent admirer, I found Tanya’s camaraderie with her gay friends captivating from the start, as she playfully expressed her sentiments like, “Gay men truly make the best friends.” She even affectionately dubbed her specific companions as “elite gays.” Now, humor of this nature might not resonate universally, but in The White Lotus, it’s consistently executed with panache. Though Tanya wasn’t the most politically correct character, Coolidge embodies queer excellence, and her rendition of, “These gays, they’re trying to assassinate me!” was both uproariously funny and unsettlingly chilling.
2
“Is Greg cheating? I know you know!”
Season 2, Episode 7 – “Arrivederci”
In Season 2’s “Arrivederci,” we found it challenging to single out just one significant line because another crucial moment unfolded during Tanya’s assassination attempt on Quentin. As she loomed over him, brandishing her weapon, she didn’t seek explanations about his motives for attempting to kill her, who had hired him, or the authenticity of their friendship. Instead, her only concern appeared to be verifying Greg’s unfaithfulness.
A Derpy Death
It was almost undeniable that Greg wasn’t just having an affair, but had also hired Quentin and his team to harm Tanya at this point in the series. Yet, surprisingly, this revelation barely registered with Tanya. Instead, she focused on eliminating most of the men before uttering her famous line. The episode concluded with another catchy quote, “You can do it,” followed by Tanya falling off the ship, hitting her head, and drowning. As the show’s creators admitted, her death was a bit comical, yet fitting in its own way.
1
“Whenever I stay at a White Lotus, I always have a memorable time.”
Season 2, Episode 1 – “Ciao”
In Episode 1 of Season 2, Tanya’s most cherished quote emerged. Upon reaching the White Lotus, she warmly greeted Valentina, expressing her delight that the resort had truly spared no effort – a consistent experience she always enjoyed there. She also proudly shared her past as a Petal and her current status within the Blossom Circle of the resort, which added a touch of humor to the scene. Remarkably, the delivery of her first line seemed perfectly suitable for a tagline.
Will Be Remembered
The line was used in the Season 2 trailer for a reason – Tanya is simply unforgettable, just like the series itself. From infidelity, suspicious deaths within the LGBTQ+ community, and alcoholic chaos, The White Lotus has made a significant impact on television. Despite Coolidge’s departure, there’s still plenty to anticipate in Season 3.
