Contrary to speculation, Daniel Craig is no longer part of the Sgt. Rock project at DC Studios. Initially planned as a reunion with Luca Guadagnino, who was set to direct, and Justin Kuritzkes, who would write the script, the team may now be looking towards the actor from The Bear for their upcoming film. Production could start earlier than anticipated.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig will no longer be playing the lead in Sgt. Rock. The reason for his departure remains unclear, but it’s possible that scheduling conflicts or a loss of interest due to the underperformance and lack of Academy Awards recognition for Queer could be factors. Now, they’re looking for a new actor, with Jeremy Allen White, star of the popular Hulu series The Bear, being considered for the main role.
Sgt. Rock, a comic book character, was introduced in issue #81 of “Our Army at War” in April 1959 by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert. He serves as the commander of Easy Company, a WWII unit that had earlier been featured in the series “Creature Commandos,” where G.I. Robot served. This series was the character’s first appearance within the DC Universe before his potential upcoming film. Warner Bros. had plans to make a Sgt. Rock movie during the 1980s and 1990s, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis being considered for the lead role at one point. More recently, Jeremy Allen White is being considered for the role, suggesting a fresh interpretation of the character.
‘Sgt. Rock’ is Being Fast-Tracked
According to The Hollywood Reporter, there’s a strong possibility that the production of Sgt. Rock could start this summer in the UK. This suggestion strengthens the speculation that Sgt. Rock might be the DC Studios film scheduled for release on May 29, 2026, by Warner Bros. If this is true, Sgt. Rock would become the second film in the DC Universe, with a release date one month before Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This would also mean that Sgt. Rock would have the quickest production timeline among recent DC projects, as Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow began filming over a year before their respective release dates. With this summer 2026 release date in mind, it’s likely that casting for Sgt. Rock will intensify in the upcoming months.
If Sgt. Rock is slated for release on May 29, 2026, with Jeremy Allen White in the lead role, it means that he will have two movies premiering consecutively. Presently, Allen is scheduled to lend his voice to Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is set to debut on May 22, 2026. This film marks the first Star Wars movie to hit theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Allen has garnered three Golden Globes and two Emmys for his portrayal of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto on The Bear, and he will soon be seen as Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. Given this, director Luca Guadagnino is keen to secure a critically acclaimed actor for his DC World War II-era movie. Meanwhile, Craig’s film with Guadagnino, Queer, will be available on Max in March 2025.
