On the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard, the actor talked about the negative reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and his characterization of Lex Luthor as the Superman antagonist.
In an interview, Jesse Eisenberg stated that he starred in a Batman film which didn’t fare well with audiences, and his performance wasn’t well-liked either. He admitted, somewhat awkwardly, that this poor reception in such a high-profile project may have had a lasting impact on his career.
He additionally pointed out that in the film industry, “If you’ve been part of a major motion picture but aren’t well-regarded, those responsible for casting future films typically won’t consider you for their next project.
Despite achieving recognition from the Oscars for his performance in “The Social Network“, Eisenberg acknowledged that he’s also worked on projects that have been poorly received and often remain unnoticed. For the majority of people, these projects are largely unknown.
He stated, “Given its public nature, I’m not accustomed to reading announcements, criticisms, film articles, or similar, hence I was oblivious to the negative reception it faced.
Regardless of the criticism, I stood firm in my affection for the role: “I genuinely enjoyed the movie, every bit of it. So, I can’t help but feel accountable if things didn’t go as planned. It wasn’t that they wronged me; instead, I felt like I might have stumbled somewhere. And so, it felt like I had to navigate my way out again.
I found it disheartening, and to be honest, there are times when I feel persistently down. It’s like saying, ‘Well, yes, obviously, I had an excellent chance. Naturally, it didn’t work out.’ It’s a constant pessimistic outlook.
The 2016 movie directed by Zack Snyder, titled “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” earned over $873 million globally and featured Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. Despite its financial success, the film garnered mixed reactions from viewers, ultimately receiving four Razzie Awards. Specifically, Affleck, Cavill, and Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor won for worst on-screen duo, while Eisenberg himself was awarded the worst supporting actor Razzie.
In a conversation with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder was questioned about rumors suggesting that either Tom Hanks or Adam Driver were considered for the antagonist part of Lex Luthor within the studio.
He confirmed that he indeed spoke with Adam over the phone regarding the reported casting choices. Furthermore, he mentioned discussing the matter with Leonardo DiCaprio, who apparently presented numerous creative suggestions during their meeting.
The director commented, ‘Ultimately, he seemed unsure but was incredibly knowledgeable about the subject matter and characters.’ In many aspects, it was him who suggested to me the concept of Superman battling the Justice League at one point.
Affleck has been vocal about the film, expressing that he “really enjoyed it” and considered it the “greatest success” of his career, but admitted there were “many editorial challenges.” In a 2016 interview, he commented, “That movie was unique because it wasn’t necessarily evaluated based on its execution, but more so on its overall mood.
