JID drops GDLU (Preluxe): Sneak peek at upcoming album

On the 3rd of July, artist JID unveiled an unexpected release of the project titled GDLU (Preluxe) through his Instagram account. This is a sneak peek for his upcoming album, God Does Like Ugly, which will officially drop on August 8, 2025.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into a fresh album release, I’d usually find the artist dropping their masterpiece and letting us fans soak it up for a while before unveiling an extended version packed with remixes or bonus tracks that didn’t quite make the cut. But in this unique rollout, JID has flipped the script on us. Instead of waiting, he’s releasing additional content first, making us eagerly anticipate the main album!

Instead of keeping us in suspense for a deluxe version or even the full album, JID has chosen to offer us a sneak peek at what’s to come. Think of it as a tasty appetizer before we get the main course – GDLU (Preluxe) includes four songs that, as per JID’s announcement, will not appear on the official album itself.

A review of JID’s GDLU (Preluxe) – Setting up for success?

“Behold”

Lo and behold,” could be an effective alternative for introducing a project like this. In the opening lines, JID asserts, “My rhymes send shivers down spines, thrones often being vacated.

Straight away, JID sets his purpose for the album. In an era where numerous rappers vie for the title of being the greatest, JID re-emerges as a contender, issuing a challenge to any rival who’s up for a battle of skills with him.

“Knew Better” (feat. Lil Yachty)

The issue in the project is the track titled “Knew Better” featuring Lil Yachty. To be fair, I myself am not particularly fond of Lil Yachty’s music, even though I approached the song with an open attitude.

Regrettably, I found little appeal in the sound of the song, despite JID’s notable flow. As expected, it lacked anything particularly noteworthy overall. The best that can be said for this track is that it offers a enjoyable guest appearance to its listeners.

“Lisa” (feat. 6LACK)

There’s no question about it – my top pick is the track titled “Lisa.” This song boasts one of JID’s frequent collaborators across his discography, 6LACK. As members of the Atlanta hip-hop collective Spillage Village, where both artists found their footing, 6LACK has graced most of JID’s music ventures. In my opinion, “Lisa” boasts the finest production on the album Preluxe. The song shares a similar atmosphere to that of JID’s debut studio album, The Never Story.

“Animals (Pt. 1)” [feat. Eminem]

To round things off was a collaboration between JID and hip-hop icon, Eminem, that many found surprising. A question that arises after listening to the track is “why wasn’t it included in the album?” The song showcases powerful verses from both artists, with Eminem’s verse generating the most buzz.

From my perspective as a gamer, I’d say this track showcases what might be Eminem’s finest rapping in years. Even though he retired Slim Shady on his last album titled “The Death of Slim Shady“, the rhythm, versatility, and jaw-dropping lines in this song are reminiscent of the raw energy that made his infamous alter ego so iconic.

Over the last ten years, opinions have been divided about whether Eminem remains the talented rapper he used to be. Regardless of your stance on the debate, it’s undeniable that by showcasing his skills in this collaboration, Eminem demonstrated he’s still at the top of his game.

Without a doubt, these two artists seem to inspire one another exceptionally well, as demonstrated in their past project, “Fuel.” Given their spirit of competition, it’s not surprising that they work so effectively together.

In summary, JID’s GDLU (Preluxe) functions as a tantalizing sneak peek for the upcoming album. It’s not an exceptional masterpiece or even a strong candidate for ‘Album of the Year’, but it effectively keeps his fans engaged until the official album drops next month.

Although it might appear puzzling to omit some high-profile features from the album itself, I’m confident this strategy hints at even more exciting revelations down the line. Ideally, we could soon witness the much-anticipated team-up between Kendrick Lamar and JID, a collaboration that JID himself has been promoting recently.

After the electrifying buzz around Lamar’s feud with Drake and the drop of the incredible “GNX,” it feels like an ideal moment to bring together two of the best in rap music, just saying!
