Jigra director Vasan Bala holds himself ‘responsible’ for Alia Bhatt starrer’s debacle at box-office; ‘Something has happened where people…’

As a die-hard fan of Vasan Bala’s unique storytelling and cinematic vision, I have to say that his recent admission about Jigra’s underperformance at the box office is both heartbreaking and admirable. It’s not every day you see a filmmaker take full responsibility for a project’s failure, especially one with talents as stellar as Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina.

Discussion about the movie “Jigra,” starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, has been ongoing since its underperformance at the box office. More recently, director Vasan Bala admitted accountability for the film’s lack of success. He pointed out that there may have been an element missing that didn’t entice audiences to go to theaters and watch their movie.

During a chat with Fever FM, Vasan Bala was questioned about his thoughts on Jigra being Alia Bhatt’s “least successful opening at the box office” by the host. In response, the director mentioned that Alia is the first choice for many, and she could have been working on any other film set; however, she chose to work on Jigra instead.

Bala admitted it was his fault the movie didn’t do well, recognizing that Alia had put her trust in him by choosing him for the project.

It falls upon me to ensure our films are successful at the box office since we’re in the movie-making industry. As a result, I must investigate what may have caused audiences to stay away from the theater and not purchase tickets. It seems that something has occurred which made people feel they didn’t need to come, but if another actor were to give their time, it should be worth it, he stated.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Vasan expressed surprise at the poor performance of his film at the box office. He stressed that no one aims to fail, stating that the film was intended to be relatable and straightforward, with universal emotions. However, he admitted feeling disappointed towards his producers Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt due to the film’s underwhelming success.

During the ongoing conversations, the filmmaker chose to disable his X account on a Sunday, following online criticism that branded him as ‘arrogant’ for defending instead of admitting the movie’s shortcomings.

The story of “The Jailbreaker” is centered around two orphans, with Satya taking on a protective role towards her brother Ankur. Determined to prevent him from serving a prison term abroad, she embarks on an arduous journey. Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Alia Bhatt’s Eternal Sunshine Productions, this gripping tale hits the big screens on October 11, 2024.

Based on data from TopMob, the film “Jigra” earned approximately 220 million rupees during its initial week, even though there was little major competition at the box office.
