Jil Sander SS25 Envisions Familiar Futurism

As a seasoned fashion enthusiast with a penchant for deciphering the stories woven into each collection, I must say that Jil Sander SS25 left me utterly captivated! The brand has always been a master at weaving timeless elegance with a hint of the avant-garde, and this season was no exception.

For SS25, Jil Sander is leading us down a hallway that feels like it’s from an ancient yet indeterminate time period, with vintage floral carpets and heavy velvet drapes creating the atmosphere. This setting serves as the backdrop for a 70-piece collection that transcends eras.

The fashion show commenced featuring an impressive series of strong-shouldered suits, crafted from ethereal, shimmering materials. Designers Luke and Lucie Meiers, co-creative directors of the brand, drew inspiration from the power-dressing styles that Jil Sander introduced in the 80’s by emphasizing boxy and oversized silhouettes. A collection that would have been traditionally neutral for the brand, was accentuated under the runway lights with soft glows of purple, magenta, orange, and yellow hues.

Moving away from a strict start, pastel shades resurfaced in styles inspired by early 20th-century fashion, exuding a distinctly feminine vibe. Blouses with round collars and outfits reminiscent of flappers were paired with shiny satin fabrics. Ornamental details such as flowery embellishments, doily vents, and ruffled edges added charm to the collection. A yellow hue similar to aged plastic was prevalent in multiple looks, reinforcing a vintage atmosphere.

Initially, viewers might think that this collection is rooted in classic antique elegance. However, it swiftly transports them into a familiar postmodern era, infused with vibrant hues. The photographs echoing Luke Meier’s past work at OAMC lend a modern twist to the range, as seen in an eye-catching print of a mystifying retro car illuminated by green-tinged fluorescent light. Postmodern elements are also evident in accessories such as chrome-studded black leather bags and python-patterned footwear. Lastly, a vivid burst of blood orange dominates several final looks, including a patent leather trench coat, hinting at the dawn of something new or perhaps the beginning of a foreboding future.
