As a gamer, I’m always eager to dive into new worlds, but lately, I’ve been immersed in the musical universe of Joe Armon-Jones. He wears many hats, from keyboardist to composer, producer, record label owner, and member of Ezra Collective. Fresh off the September release of Dance, No One’s Watching by Ezra Collective, he’s now unveiling his first solo LP in six years: All the Quiet. This extensive 20-track album is set to drop in two installments, with “Part I” landing on March 28 and “Part II” following suit on June 13.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, Armon-Jones, a connoisseur of dub music, spent a significant amount of time learning to operate a mixing console, just like the legends of the genre such as King Tubby did. His deep affection for the art propelled him to set up a complete home studio equipped with reel-to-reel tape machines and spring reverb, among other things. He would subsequently test his creations on the powerful Unit 137 sound system located in London’s Lewisham district. “I became quite fascinated with delving into the sonic universe of dub,” he shared. “I wanted to incorporate that process into jazz, funk, and all the other genres I adore.
Despite being entirely composed, produced, and mixed by Armon-Jones, the album “All the Quiet” boasts a stellar lineup of collaborators such as Nubya Garcia, James Mollison, and Ife Ogunjobi from his band Ezra Collective. Following four days of live recording sessions, Armon-Jones retreated to his studio to layer, adjust, and manipulate the tracks, incorporating signature dub techniques like delay and echo.
Prior to the upcoming March release of “All the Quiet Part I“, Armon-Jones has already shared “Kingfisher”, the initial single from the project, that includes West London dub poet Asheber in its lineup.
In addition to its online premiere, the movie titled “All the Quiet” is also coming out in several premium vinyl versions, one of which includes a comic book. Pre-orders for these editions will start soon, but until then, you can enjoy the “Kingfisher” video above and revisit our 2022 article about Ezra Collective while they were on their three-day residency at the iconic Blue Note jazz club in New York City.
