Joe Manganiello on Why the Cast of ‘True Blood’ Was “Really, Really Overqualified”

As a huge fan of “True Blood,” I can’t help but be in awe of the incredible talent that graced our screens during the show’s seven-season run. Joe Manganiello, who played Alcide Herveaux, recently shared his thoughts on the cast being “overqualified” for the roles they took on. And I completely agree with him!

Joe Manganiello explains his belief that the acting talent of the “True Blood” cast was excessively strong for the hit drama fantasy show.

In a recent episode of Podcrushed, Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin, and Sophie Ansari’s podcast, the actor recalled the “extraordinarily wild, intelligent” show they discussed, which he believed significantly advanced popular culture during its run. Notably, he pointed out that the series featured actors with impressive acting backgrounds.

As a gamer, I found True Blood quite intriguing, even though we were all highly skilled actors for the project. The script, however, was more complex than it initially appeared. It had an alluring charm akin to Tennessee Williams’ works, and occasionally became as dramatic and intense as an opera.

“He went on to explain, ‘You see, they were all part of the theatrical circle. There were Carnegie Mellon graduates like Mike McMillan and me. Then there were Juilliard alumni such as Rutina Wesley and Nelsan Ellis. Chris Bauer represented Yale, while we had actors from London’s West End and an international cast. We had Alexander Skarsgård from Sweden and Stephen Moyer from England, along with Anna Paquin who hails from New Zealand via Canada. It was a brilliantly talented and well-trained group of actors.'”

The host of “Deal or No Deal Island” wasn’t off base – Anna Paquin (Sookie) earned an Oscar at the age of 11 in 1994, prior to “True Blood,” for her performance in “The Piano.” Alexander Skarsgård (Eric) and Carrie Preston (Arlene) have each received Emmy awards for their roles in “Big Little Lies” and “The Good Wife,” respectively. Lois Smith, who portrayed Sookie’s grandmother Adele, was honored with a Tony Award in 2020 for “The Inheritance.” Denis O’Hare also received a Tony in 2003 for his role in “Take Me Out.”

True Blood, a series produced by Alan Ball, aired for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014. The story revolves around Sookie, a telepathic waitress, who gets entangled in thrilling experiences with humans, vampires, and eventually other supernatural entities.
