Joey Chestnut Wins Netflix’s Live Labor Day Hot Dog Eating Competition

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours watching ESPN and the Food Network, I can’t help but feel like I just witnessed a heavyweight championship match at the culinary circus! The rivalry between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi is reminiscent of Mario vs. Bowser in the Mushroom Kingdom – intense, longstanding, and always entertaining.

Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi settled some unfinished beef.

On Labor Day, September 2nd, I tuned into Netflix’s thrilling live streaming event hosted by Rob Riggle and Nikki Garcia. It was an unforgettable spectacle as competitive eaters Chestnut and Kobayashi went head-to-head for the first time in fifteen years! The grand prize was a jaw-dropping $100,000, and the victor was also bestowed with a custom championship title belt, specially crafted by WWE. What an exhilarating showdown!

Although Kobayashi had previously mentioned retiring, he expressed a desire to face off against his old rival one more time. In the end, however, it was Chestnut who emerged victorious, having consumed 83 hot dogs.

For a long time, I’ve been striving to consume 80 hot dogs, Chestnut admitted, giving credit to Kobayashi for igniting the competitive spirit within him. “He motivates me,” he added. “We may not have always gotten along, but we challenge each other to achieve our peak performance.”

“I feel like I did everything I could,” Kobayashi said of the loss.

For quite some time, these two eating champions have faced off against each other annually at the Nathan’s contest. However, their last direct competition took place back in 2009. In that year-end showdown, Chestnut managed to outdo Kobayashi in a sudden death round of consuming five hot dogs.

This round of the competition will see some new rules: contestants can’t submerge hot dogs or buns in water, they must keep them together, and any rule violations or vomiting may lead to penalties. After 10 minutes, competitors have just 30 seconds left to swallow whatever remains, and extra crumbs could impact their final scores if needed.

Prior to the competition, Chestnut and Kobayashi reflected on their rivalry.

“Chestnut remarked, ‘He was extraordinary as a champion, but his performance dipped after he began to lose.’ Furthermore, he claimed that whenever Kobayashi loses, he tends to offer an explanation, such as the time Kobayashi disclosed he had a jaw problem.”

“Kobayashi expressed frustration when he found out Joey claimed his jaw issue wasn’t real. For the first time, his personal feelings are at stake. He angrily declared, ‘I just want to give him a good punch!'”

Chestnut is a 16-time champion at Nathan’s (winning every year for the past eight) and holds the record for consuming the most hot dogs within 10 minutes, with 76. Kobayashi, on the other hand, has won six times at Nathan’s and was recently featured in a Netflix documentary titled “Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut“. In this documentary, he announced his plans to retire from competitive eating. Back in 2010, a contract dispute led to Kobayashi being barred from participating in the competition. Throughout his career, he has set numerous world records for competitive eating and currently holds over ten records in this field.

“Kobayashi made it clear that he won’t retire until he defeats his long-time rival one last time, as stated at the beginning of the competition. This ongoing feud has been simmering for quite some time. By competing against Joey on Netflix, fans from around the globe will get to witness me knock him out.”

During the special, other Olympians Ryan Murphy, Max Irving, and Ryan Lochte competed against Stonie in a chicken wing eating showdown — Stonie won after eating 53 wings in 3 minutes. Then, 24-time Guinness World Record holder Leah Shutkever also attempted to set the record for the most watermelon eaten in one minute which she achieved.

The “Untitled Beef” is the most recent live show broadcasted on Netflix. Coming up next are other live events, such as a boxing match featuring Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson in November and two NFL games as part of an exclusive contract with the league in December.
