As a lover of dystopian tales that mirror our society, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Netflix film, “Uglies.” Having grown up in a world where social media filters and cosmetic surgery are as common as smartphones, this story feels eerily close to home.
“All my life I wanted to be pretty. I thought it would change everything.”
Instead of striving for beauty, as hinted in the newly released trailer for the Netflix movie, Uglies, there may be dark consequences.
The movie, based on the 2005 science fiction novel with the same title by Scott Westerfeld, takes place in a future where everyone gets cosmetic surgery at age 16 to look attractive and fit into society. However, main character Tally (King) discovers that this exterior beauty hides disturbing truths and decides to go on a quest to rescue her friend who escaped and challenges the status quo of this society.
In this production, Chase Stokes, famously known for his role in King and Outer Banks, joins forces with Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos, Charmin Lee, and Laverne Cox.
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that this film is masterfully directed by McG, based on a screenplay penned collaboratively by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson. The production team includes John Davis, Jordan Davis, Robyn Meisinger, McG himself, and Mary Viola. Additionally, Joey King, Jamie King, Westerfeld, John Fox, and Jenny Hink serve as executive producers. I can’t wait to see this cinematic gem unfold!
In an interview with Tudum, McG expressed that the movie is centered around internal beauty. He viewed it as a reflection of our current times where many struggle to post unaltered photos on social media due to the need for filters and edits to present an idealized version of beauty. He suggested this moment serves as a reminder to breathe deeply, focus on personal growth, appreciate others genuinely, and embrace self-acceptance, stating that this approach to life is more rewarding.
Uglies will be available to stream on Netflix globally on Sept. 13.
