John Boyega Wants to Be THE X-Men’s Bishop

John Boyega has mentioned that Kevin Feige, a key figure in the Marvel Universe, has previously reached out to him about playing a character in the Marvel films. However, the role Boyega might be interested in could catch some people off guard. Known for his breakout performance in 2011’s “Attack the Block” and his subsequent rise to fame with roles like Finn in the “Star Wars” series, Boyega has since moved on to star in films such as “Breaking,” “The Woman King,” and “They Cloned Tyrone.” Now, there are suggestions that Boyega could be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe following his hints about discussions regarding this potential move.

At a gathering organized by Josh Horowitz during C2E2, as reported by Screen Rant, I (John Boyega) shared that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige once inquired about which Marvel character I’d like to embody. Initially, I was stumped, but a fan’s suggestion at the event – the X-Men character Bishop – sparked an intriguing idea in me. Immediately, I expressed my interest: “Bishop, you say?

“Oh, I’d play Bishop.”

Although Bishop may not be as famous as Iron Man, Spider-Man, or The Hulk in the Marvel universe, he plays a crucial role in the X-Men lore. Originating from the minds of writer John Byrne and artist Whilce Portacio, Bishop made his debut in issue #282 of The Uncanny X-Men in November 1991. This character is unique as he hails from a mutant dystopia and possesses the ability to absorb energy. Bishop has graced the screens in both X-Men: The Animated Series and its sequel, X-Men ’97. In 2014’s movie X-Men: Days of Future Past, Omar Sy portrayed Bishop.

Is John Boyega Joining the MCU? Rumors and Fancasts Explained

It’s intriguing to note John Boyega’s remarks regarding interactions with Kevin Feige, given that there were long-standing rumors suggesting he might take over from Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a role Marvel Studios eventually abandoned in favor of Doctor Doom. Among those disappointed by T’Challa’s retirement following Chadwick Boseman’s demise, Boyega was a popular fan choice for Black Panther in the MCU. However, these were merely fan-casting and speculation, and as far as we know, they never materialized. Yet, it seems that Boyega has been on Marvel Studios’ radar since as early as 2015, a time when both Age of Ultron and The Force Awakens were released.

It appears that Boyega was interested in playing Bishop due to a fan’s suggestion, but it’s not a poor choice by any means. The original X-Men are slated to reappear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” but afterwards, the MCU plans to introduce its own version of the legendary mutant team. Casting Boyega as Bishop for the potential future X-Men reboot in the MCU could set a strong foundation for the team and make their version of Bishop a time traveler from the get-go. The 20th Century Fox X-Men films used Bishop mainly as a brief appearance, giving Boyega and Marvel Studios an opportunity to create a unique take on the character. If cast as Bishop, Boyega could gain the same level of popularity that Dave Bautista has achieved with Drax the Destroyer or Paul Rudd with Scott Lang.
