For some time now, it’s been revealed that Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks are working on a documentary dedicated to the late, iconic comedian John Candy. In addition, a biography is also in development, penned by Paul Myers – the sibling of renowned Canadian comedian Mike Myers. This forthcoming project sees Paul writing about Candy’s history, the potential future he might have had if his life hadn’t been cut short, and the cherished memories his friends continue to share.
The book titled “John Candy: A Life In Comedy” is scheduled for release later this year. Within its pages, the author explores the enduring popularity of John Candy, best known for his roles in films like “Uncle Buck” and “Canadian Bacon“, despite occasional set disruptions during his career. Remarkably, through his investigation, it proved challenging to find anyone who would utter a negative word about Candy, as he pens this tribute to the late comedian’s life and legacy.
I found Candy’s story particularly captivating as he was a renowned celebrity who passed away at a young age, yet remains deeply admired by many. To this very day, it’s extremely rare to encounter someone who isn’t a fan of him.
For generations following his passing, Candy’s memory remains cherished, and his films continue to be widely referenced in contemporary conversations. In my discussions with individuals acquainted with Candy prior to his demise, a particular anecdote about him resurfaces repeatedly among his friends.
On How Dan Aykroyd’s Eulogy For John Candy Still Comes Up
Although John Candy never became an official member of Saturday Night Live (SNL), he did serve as a host in 1983. Notably, he endured more “burning” than many other comedians who appeared on the show during subsequent years. In their book, “Live From New York,” authors Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller describe how SNL often keeps several names on standby, known as the backburner. According to Bob Odenkirk, Candy was frequently asked by Lorne Michaels to appear on the show, and it’s said that John Candy was the most “burned” potential host by the time of his passing.
Despite this, John Candy continued to maintain friendships with alumni, such as Dan Aykroyd, who he worked alongside in the 1988 film “Great Outdoor Friends.” Notably, Aykroyd eulogized him at his funeral and performed a moving rendition of “O Canada.” As per Myers’ book (as reported by People):
To this very day, it’s Dan’s eulogy at Candy’s funeral that people continue to reminisce about. He was such an integral part of Candy’s life that we invited him to write the foreword, which he did with grace and eloquence yet again, demonstrating his enduring affection for Candy – a testament to love.
Previously, Catherine O’Hara, a close associate of his, narrated the details of Candy’s funeral, highlighting the “O Canada” incident and disclosing an extraordinary fact: when John passed away, the Los Angeles Police Department temporarily halted traffic on the 405 freeway – one of the nation’s busiest highways – to ensure a peaceful send-off. This underscores the profound impact Candy had on people.

On How John Candy Could Have Won An Oscar If Things Would Be Different
John could have felt “scorned” by Saturday Night Live, but he was a multitalented and productive actor during his Hollywood career. He was a cast member on the popular Canadian series SCTV, where he crossed paths with Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, among others. He showcased his versatility by taking on various roles, starring in his own films like Uncle Buck (which his daughter claimed mirrored his real-life personality the most) and delivering unforgettable performances in movies such as Home Alone and Rookie of the Year.
Per Myers, if he had lived longer, her truly feels he would be destined for greatness.
Not only was he an exceptional stand-up comedian, but he also possessed the talent to potentially win an Oscar for his acting skills, if fate had allowed him to live longer.
Regardless of the Emmy recognitions and victories Candy and his SCTV colleagues received during their lives, they never received an Oscar nod. Yet, he left behind a significant collection of work that resonated with fans across various ages and generations, making personal and professional impacts. It’s safe to say he left behind quite the legacy.
