As a gamer with a deep appreciation for art and storytelling, I must say that watching the screen adaptation of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson has been nothing short of exhilarating. The talent on display is truly awe-inspiring, particularly the performances by the remarkable Black women in this production.
In the movie version of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” several actors who were part of the 2022 Broadway production of the 1987 play reprise their roles for the screen. This includes John David Washington portraying Boy Willie Charles, Samuel L. Jackson as Doaker Charles, Michael Potts as Wining Boy Charles, and Ray Fisher as Lymon.
In the character of Berniece Charles, Boy Willie’s sister, steps Danielle Deadwyler – an actress acclaimed for playing Mamie Till in the 2022 film ‘Till’.
John David expressed his admiration for the Black actresses he worked with during the Los Angeles premiere of the film at the Egyptian Theater on Tuesday, stating to The Hollywood Reporter that they are truly shining. He noted their incredible talent and asked, ‘Who will be the next Viola Davis?’ He emphasized the need for people with influence to promote these talented individuals, saying, ‘We’ve found them.’ They are here, now, and their exceptional artistry is becoming more visible.
Right now, ‘The Piano Lesson’ is being shown in certain cinemas and will be streamed on Netflix this Friday. This production is a true family endeavor, with John David starring in the main role, Denzel Washington as producer, Katia Washington as executive producer, Malcolm Washington as co-writer, and director. This film represents his first time directing a feature-length movie.

Malcolm shared that he initially discussed his idea with his brother and Sam Jackson, who both showed strong support. This concept, being quite daring for such work, resonated with them. They wanted Malcolm to lead this project as planned, and their enthusiasm propelled the idea forward. Things started moving quickly, gathering momentum from there.
When Malcolm contacted Potts regarding the possibility of reprising his part in the horror drama centered around a family heirloom and its hidden mysteries, Potts’ sole query was: “What’s the starting date?
Potts remarked, ‘This Washington family was exceptional.’ I can’t fathom what went on in their home to produce such remarkable children. They are truly impressive – yes, I realize this now,” he corrected himself. “Their mother and father are incredible, kind-hearted, genuine individuals who radiated these qualities on set. I felt welcomed by them.’
Gail Bean, the star of ‘P-Valley’, who plays Dolly, expressed a sentiment similar to this: “It’s as if I’m attending an advanced course on the business, art, and beauty of acting, especially for black artists. Miss Pauletta [Washington], now I understand why everyone praises her so much; she truly embodies what we imagine.
As a gamer, I can say that just like in a cooperative game where my teammates and I work together seamlessly without any rules about what not to do, John David and Malcolm approach working with family the same way. It’s all about the wins, the successes we achieve together on set.
Give it another shot if you’re aiming for success, just like I did with my sister Katia. If Malcolm’s around and up for it, he’ll be lighting things up like a blazing inferno. So, fingers crossed, I hope to get him on the line again.
He also mentioned that the Jacksons were deeply involved, “It was very much a family event for them.” Sam Jackson, the original cast member, and LaTanya Jackson, who made history as the first African-American woman to direct an August Wilson play on Broadway, are both part of this significant achievement. That’s quite remarkable.
Regarding Malcolm, his advice is to always tell the truth, be honest, and show respect to others. He’s eager for another chance to collaborate on a future family project. It was just announced that Denzel will adapt Joe Turner’s Come And Gone, the next play by August Wilson, although no cast or crew has been assigned yet. Malcolm expressed his enthusiasm, saying he would jump at the opportunity to work on anything they propose.
