John Lithgow Responds to Criticism of His Dumbledore Casting: “I Will Do My Best”

Actor John Lithgow is excited about taking on the role of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in the forthcoming Harry Potter television production.

Lately, Lithgow expressed to BBC’s The One Show that he’s both thrilled and daunted about assuming a role that has previously been portrayed in the Harry Potter films by Richard Harris (Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets) and Michael Gambon (Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Deathly Hallows: Part 2), as well as by Jude Law in the Fantastic Beasts movies (Crimes of Grindelwald, Secrets of Dumbledore)).

Lithgow stated, “I’ll be stepping into the shoes of Michael Gambon, a formidable actor. I may not hail from England, but I’ve portrayed an Englishman on screen. Let me remind you that I convincingly played Winston Churchill in ‘The Crown,’ so don’t worry about my abilities.

The actor portraying Conclave defended his role, acknowledging that some people have voiced concerns due to him being an American instead of British, as were the previous performers.

It’s a great excitement for me, but I understand that many people were surprised by the choice of an American to portray the final English sorcerer. Nevertheless, I promise to give it my all.

For quite some time, there have been whispers about Daniel Lithgow’s involvement in the casting. However, just last month, he clarified that the idea behind the entire revamp of “Harry Potter” is that an entire season will be dedicated to a single book. As a result, he had been preparing by reading halfway through the second book at the time.

Just a few days ago, HBO announced their main cast: Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid, the gamekeeper at Hogwarts; Janet McTeer is Professor Minerva McGonagall; Paapa Essiedu steps into the role of Potions Professor Severus Snape; Luke Thallon portrays Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor Quirinus Quirrell; and Paul Whitehouse takes on the character of Argus Filch, the caretaker.
