John Malkovich has explained his motivation for signing up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, and it’s a reason that many people can identify with. Malkovich joins an esteemed group of actors, including Harrison Ford, Robert Redford, and Glenn Close, who have left fans surprised by their decision to star in a Marvel production. Known for his exceptional talent and international fame, Malkovich is often at the top of many casting lists but has never before been part of a superhero franchise – until now.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, Malkovich explained that his decision not to participate in Marvel movies was primarily driven by financial reasons rather than artistic ones. He stated, “I had no artistic qualms about them whatsoever. I simply didn’t find the deals they offered appealing.” Further, he mentioned that given the amount of time and energy these roles would demand, a substantial compensation was necessary to divert him from other projects.
Making these films is quite challenging… If you expect someone to spend six months dangling from a crane in front of a green screen, you should compensate them. It’s understandable if you don’t want to pay them, but then I wouldn’t be interested in doing it either, as I prefer performing on stage, directing a play, or engaging in other activities instead.
It isn’t precisely known how many times he was given a chance to play a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but John Malkovich was among Sony’s initial choices for portraying Norman Osborn / Green Goblin in Spider-Man, a role eventually taken by Willem Dafoe. He was formally cast as Adrian Toomes / The Vulture in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, but the film was scrapped by Sony Pictures in favor of restarting the series with The Amazing Spider-Man. Malkovich is part of the cast for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, though the character he will play in the reboot remains a mystery as of now.
Who Is John Malkovich Playing in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’?
Following Malkovich’s announcement as a cast member, MovieWeb proposed seven potential characters he could portray in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“. One possibility is that he might be depicting Ivan Kragoff, also known as The Red Ghost, a Russian scientist and an initial adversary of the Fantastic Four from the comics whose appearance seems to align closely with Malkovich’s brief glimpse in the trailer. Another theory suggests he may be playing The Mad Thinker, another scientist who could play a significant role in helping the Fantastic Four access the Multiverse and defeating Galactus. This character is notable as he has a prominent part in “Fantastic Four: Life Story“, one of the comics Marvel suggested fans revisit back in 2024.
One intriguing idea floating around online is that Malkovich might portray an alternate take on Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, hinting at the Comic’s Council of Reeds. As various theories suggest that the film will unveil Franklin Richards and hint towards Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman being pregnant, it’s plausible that Malkovich could be playing a future version of Franklin Richards. Since Galactus serves as the movie’s main antagonist and has a unique connection with Franklin Richards in the comics, this theory seems quite probable.
As we eagerly count down to the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in just five short months, I can hardly contain my excitement! With tantalizing details on the horizon, it seems almost inevitable that Marvel Studios and Disney will soon unveil the enigmatic role played by the esteemed John Malkovich. It’s a secret that has left fans guessing, but I have a feeling we won’t be kept in suspense for much longer!
