Among the many talented actors who could convincingly portray an ancient Roman philosopher, John Malkovich stands out as a top choice. His acting skills allow him to effortlessly embody regal, cautious, sometimes arrogant, and at times self-conscious performances that are fitting for intellectual titans of antiquity. The trailer and stills suggest that he’s bringing this versatility to his role as the stoic character in the movie “Seneca” (also known as “Seneca: On the Creation of Earthquakes”). Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution arm of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has secured the VOD rights to the historical drama. Alongside John Malkovich, Geraldine Chaplin and Tom Xander are featured in this production, which was filmed some time ago but will now be accessible in North America on digital platforms, cable, satellite, and DVD from April 8, 2025. As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must share that Seneca, a film I’m excited about, boasts an impressive cast. Alongside me, Tom Xander takes on the role of Nero, while Geraldine Chaplin plays Cecelia and Mary-Louise Parker portrays Agrippina. Sadly, we lost Julian Sands, who breathed life into Rufus before his untimely disappearance in early 2023. The plot revolves around… (the synopsis follows).
In the year 65 AD, Rome finds itself under the rule of Emperor Nero. Seneca, a renowned philosopher, has been closely associated with Nero since childhood, playing a significant role in his rise to power. However, as time passes, Nero begins to tire of Seneca’s influence. Seizing an opportunity, when an attempt on Seneca’s life is thwarted, Nero falsely accuses Seneca of being involved in the plot against him.
At his farmhouse, Seneca hosts an extravagant gathering. Suddenly, a messenger arrives with news from Emperor Nero: Seneca’s execution order, to be carried out by morning. This last night serves as his ultimate trial: Is he truly a manipulator, a pretender, and a supporter of the powerful? Or does he embody his self-perception as a virtuous man who faces death fearlessly? The story is grounded in historical records and Seneca’s original writings.
Despite not appearing to be a high-octane action flick at first glance, Seneca is directed by Robert Schwentke, who has a solid background in action films. Notably, he directed the 2010 movie Red, starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Karl Urban, and John Malkovich. He also helmed R.I.P.D., an action-fantasy film with Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds, and Mary-Louise Parker (who was also in Red). Schwentke’s resume includes Insurgent, a film from the Divergent series, starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Theo James. Matthew David Wilder co-wrote the film with Schwentke. Seneca was produced by Frieder Schlaich and Irene von Alberti. According to Schwentke, this film is his work.
Seneca’s play can be seen as a grand display of high camp. The story, set in an unusual time period, follows a philosopher and life advisor named Seneca, who assists the ruthless emperor Nero in gaining acceptance and immense riches. It is a tragic comedy that explores a man’s failed quest for immortality through words and ideas. In the end, Seneca demonstrates not only his ability to speak persuasively but also to act on his beliefs, underscoring that he wasn’t just a talker, but a doer as well.
As a keen observer, I’m thrilled to share that I played a part in the direct negotiations for Freestyle Digital Media to secure the acquisition of SENECA from the talented filmmakers themselves, along with Picture Tree International GmbH.
Seneca the Stoic
Over the last hundred years, Seneca has seen a significant rise in popularity, with his stoic philosophy being embraced, distorted, and misunderstood by various groups of self-important men – those who tend to delve into “The Art of War” while suppressing their emotions. Regrettably, this misuse occurs because Seneca was indeed a remarkable thinker, serving as a precursor to Kierkegaard’s moral philosophy. His teachings exhibited intriguing parallels with Buddhism and Confucianism. We invite you to peruse some of our favorite Seneca quotes (and suggest starting with the concise yet profound text, “On the Shortness of Life”).
A busy person is rarely focused on living; it’s one of the most challenging things to grasp. Compared to other skills, there are numerous instructors available. In fact, some young individuals have demonstrated a proficient understanding of these arts that rivals even their masters. However, learning how to live and eventually how to die takes an entire lifetime – a fact that may leave you in awe.
Do you know anyone who values their time, sees every day as precious, and realizes they’re running out of days?
Should fortune fail and poverty be my lot, I’ll find kinship among the multitude. Banishment may come knocking, but I’ll consider it a change of address, not a fate. If they bind me in chains, I’ll still feel unshackled, for these physical constraints are but temporary confines to my spirit. ‘I will perish,’ you caution, yet what you truly mean is that I’ll no longer face the perils of illness, captivity, or demise.
Starting from April 8, 2025, the movie “Seneca” can be rented or purchased for ownership on all digital HD platforms across North America, including internet, cable, and satellite services. Additionally, it will also be available on DVD.
