John Mulaney Would Play Plastic Man in the DCU for the "Money"

As a longtime fan of John Mulaney’s comedic genius and his unexpected foray into voice acting in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” I wholeheartedly believe that he would make an exceptional Plastic Man. His knack for dry humor, combined with Plastic Man’s inherent wit, would create a dynamic duo that could outsmart and entertain audiences alike.

In the growing lineup of characters for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, fans are imaginatively filling in the blanks online. One enthusiastic fan-casting envisions comedian and actor John Mulaney as the enigmatic yet undervalued hero, Plastic Man. Although his name might sound silly and he had a criminal past, Patrick O’Brian ranks among the most powerful heroes within the Justice League. While Mulaney’s witty humor would seamlessly match the character, the comedian has expressed some pessimism about his prospects of portraying the hero on screen.

In an interview with GQ, where Mulaney pretended to be an internet user answering fan questions, he was asked if he or Pete Davidson could play the comic book character Plastic Man. Surprisingly, not knowing who the character was (as Plastic Man is relatively unknown in mainstream DC Comics), Mulaney humorously responded that he had no idea about it when asked, “Would either of you (John Mulaney/ Pete Davidson) be suitable for Plastic Man?” He quipped:

“I know who Pete and I are, and I don’t know what the rest of that means.”

In a friendly and somewhat endearing manner reminiscent of an elderly relative asking for assistance with technology, Mulaney posed the question, “Is Plastic Man a DC comic character?” To the delight of his followers, he didn’t dismiss the idea outright but instead suggested, “If you know the answer, give me a ring on my personal number.” The comedian made it clear that his and Pete Davidson’s interest in playing the character was not merely casual, as he added a concluding statement: “We’re serious about this.

In essence, the primary factor for Pete’s decision would likely be financial considerations. These action-hero roles are typically well-compensated, although this too may shift with the ongoing transformation of the media industry.

John Mulaney Would Make a Perfect Plastic Man

It might be easy to forget that John Mulaney has already taken on one of “these action hero things” in the past, as the comedian only lent his voice to Peter Porker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. While he’s not as popular as Batman or Superman, Plastic Man is one of DC’s oldest comic book heroes, first appearing in Police Comics #1 way back in 1941. You might be able to guess his powers, judging from the name, as Plastic Man has the ability to stretch and contort his body to extreme lengths. Add this with the usual super strength, agility, and invulnerability, Plastic Man is one of DC Comics’ most powerful heroes — he is also believed to be the inspiration for Marvel’s Reed Richards and Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece.

Beyond his notable strength, Plastic Man stands out as one of DC Comics’ most humorous heroes. He often dons a charming smirk while delivering an endless stream of jokes and witty remarks, comparable to Deadpool. At this point, there are no confirmed plans (as far as we know) to introduce Plastic Man into the DC Universe. However, considering James Gunn’s history of creating superhero stories with a quirky and sarcastic tone (such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad), he seems like an ideal fit for the upcoming DC Universe.

The new DCU officially kicks off with
