John Oliver, in Show Taped Ahead of Biden’s Announcement, Takes Aim at Trump and RNC

As a dedicated gamer and avid follower of current events, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the latest developments in American politics. Last week’s unexpected turn of events left me feeling like I was playing a real-life version of “Keep Up with the News,” where each day brings new twists and turns that challenge your ability to stay informed.

Last week, “Last Week Tonight” had to be replaced with a message for its Sunday viewers: “This episode was recorded on July 20th.”

On Sundays, John Oliver made his appearance once again on his HBO talk show following a month-long break. Despite taping his comeback episode before the most significant news event that unfolded on that day, John’s humorous remark about the insignificance of the missed events was well-received: “Fortunately, we didn’t miss much!”

He foresaw that the news cycle would overshadow his monologue when the episode was broadcasted only a day after it was recorded.

In quick succession, Oliver described the tumultuous 2024 election debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump. During this debate, Trump was injured in an assassination attempt that unfortunately took the life of a rally attendee, leaving Trump with an ear wound. Meanwhile, Biden expressed his intention to reconsider his participation in the 2024 race if any health issues arose for him beforehand. Subsequently, Biden contracted COVID-19.

“Things are developing quickly in the news,” commented Oliver. “We’re recording on Saturday, but by the time you see this, the situation might have changed.”

On Sundays, the most noteworthy news event unfolded, following Oliver’s taping of this episode. Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Harris instead. This unexpected turn of events disrupted TV news broadcasts, requiring last-minute adjustments despite anticipating such a possibility.

As someone who has had the privilege of serving my country as its President, I can honestly say that it has been the most humbling and rewarding experience of my life. However, after much contemplation and consultation with my team and party leaders, I have come to the decision that it is in the best interest of both my political party and our great nation for me to step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term. This was not an easy choice to make, but one that I believe is necessary for the continued success and unity of our country. I will have more to say on this matter later in the week when I address the nation.

Oliver kicked off his narrative with a criticism of the Republic National Convention, labeling it as Milwaukee’s most disastrous event since Jeffrey Dahmer. He highlighted the peculiar figures on the stage and referred to some audience members wearing ear bandages in solidarity with Trump’s injury as “quirky supporters.” Furthermore, he mentioned the B-list celebrity appearances from Hulk Hogan to Kid Rock.

The talk show host expressed disagreement with the expectation of a more subdued Trump and RNC following an assassination attempt against him. According to Oliver, such a message of unity isn’t typical for that situation or that person. He also criticized Trump for using the term “migrant crime.”

As someone who has worked closely with immigrant communities for the past decade, I can attest to the complexities and nuances of the immigration issue. While it is a fact that the rates of crime among migrants have not significantly increased, the perception that they have is a powerful force that cannot be ignored. This feeling, fueled by fear-mongering and misinformation, has the potential to cause immense harm and exacerbate existing tensions.

Based on my personal experiences and observations, I strongly believe that the next Democratic candidate for president, be it Joe Biden or anyone else, will be a significantly better choice than the current administration when it comes to immigration policies. Although I don’t claim that Biden is without flaw in this area, I have seen enough evidence of the devastating consequences of the current approach towards immigrants and their communities.

In response to recent reports of Democrats reluctantly accepting a potential Trump presidency before Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Oliver boldly expressed his opposition by stating, “I refuse to accept that outcome.” Alternatively, he could have said, “I won’t give in to another Trump term.”
