John Oliver Jokes About Pope Francis Dying a Day After Meeting With J.D. Vance: “Relatable”

John Oliver opened Sunday’s Last Week Tonight by talking about the death of Pope Francis.

Francis passed away on Monday, at the age of 88, following a stroke that caused a coma and ultimately heart failure. He had long battled chronic lung disease, and had just spent 38 days in the hospital due to respiratory problems which resulted in double pneumonia.

On his HBO show, Oliver pointed out that Francis passed away “the very next day following a meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance – a timing that, to be honest, is surprisingly relatable.

Following the growing rumors regarding the identity of Francis’ upcoming replacement, several possible contenders have emerged. Among them are Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, and Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

Concerning that, Oliver played a video where an expert explained: “In Italian, his name translates to ‘dance of pizza’.

Oliver quipped playfully, ‘Even though it might sound a bit cheekily Italian, remember, every surname in Italy translates to ‘dance with pizza’.

He continued by saying: “Now, if the Catholic Church were to select a ‘Pope Dancewithpizza’, would it immediately restore its reputation? It’s hard to say without trying. Granted, he might not make a good Pope, but let’s not deprive us of Papa PizzaBall in these trying times. We need something like this right now.

For twelve years, Francis served as Pope. On the day preceding his demise, which occurred on Easter Sunday, he made his final public appearance, bestowing blessings upon multitudes in Saint Peter’s Square within Vatican City. Prior to this event, he had a meeting with Vance.
