On “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver once more poked fun at President Trump and his so-called “foolish trade” conflict, this time focusing on remarks Trump made concerning the rise in doll prices as a result of tariffs.
Previously, the president illustrated the impact of tariffs by comparing it to the increase in the price of dolls: “Perhaps children will end up with only two dolls instead of thirty, and these two dolls might be slightly more expensive than usual.
Oliver remarked: “That’s quite an unusual comment. It’s just another strange addition to the discordant symphony of Trump and children-related incidents, as now ‘kids will have two dolls instead of 30’ can be compared with the lawnboy scream and the time he questioned a child about believing in Santa Claus, saying, ‘At 7, it’s marginal, right?’
Later on the HBO show, its host pointed out that Trump made similar remarks a few days prior, stating: “I don’t believe an enchanting 11-year-old girl requires thirty toys. Perhaps she would be content with just three or four.
Oliver’s perspective: “Wow, there’s a lot here. ‘A beautiful 11-year-old girl that’s being referred to as a baby’? That’s not appropriate. It’s unsettling firstly, and secondly, I can assure you, if someone calls an 11-year-old girl a baby like that, she’ll probably get quite upset.
I passionately share: “It’s quite astonishing to consider that playing with dolls is primarily for those at the age of 11. Common knowledge suggests a different timeline, with building blocks captivating us from ages 1 to 3, followed by doll play from ages 3 to 7, and our phones becoming our constant companions from around age 8 onwards, right up until the end.
However, Trump didn’t halt his explanations. Instead, he carried on clarifying his thoughts during subsequent comments made aboard Air Force One.
Trump stated that he believes a young girl, regardless of age between 9 to 15 years old, does not require 37 dolls for happiness. He suggested that she might find joy in just a couple or a few more than that.
As a gamer, I found myself utterly cringing at the way this guy talked about females, but I couldn’t look away. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion, waiting to see how many absurd age and number combinations he would throw around: “Let me clarify, a young woman, a 10-year-old kid, a 9-year-old girl, a 15-year-old teen, a 45-year-old gal who’s still youthful at heart, doesn’t need 37 toys. She could be content with two, three, four, six, eight, or even nine, yes, nine! Or maybe ten, or perhaps eleven, we can’t exclude eleven toys, or twelve – a good number, isn’t it? Twelve apostles, twelve days of Christmas, 12 Angry Men – Henry Fonda, a fantastic actor, right? The rest were quite angry, very angry men. That’s what we need to get rid of in this country, illegal immigrants. Or, hold on, how about thirteen toys? That’s my final offer.
Oliver playfully pondered if Trump had possibly interacted with a fifteen-year-old girl, considering that the typical age for playing with dolls is over by then: “Has he ever encountered a 15-year-old girl? That’s an absurd question. Naturally, he has. He was acquainted with Jeffrey Epstein.
Apart from Oliver’s jest, he implied that sticks might become trendy playthings due to tariffs: “Toss them, catch them, ignite them. Just appreciate them. Sticks could be the only toy you’ll ever need, fortunately, because they’re also the only ones you’ll ever own.
