As a gamer who has seen more than a few twists and turns in virtual worlds, I must say that the real world seems to be giving me quite the rollercoaster ride lately. The 2024 presidential election results have left me feeling like I just lost a game on the hardest difficulty level.
On the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver scrutinized the outcomes of the 2024 presidential election, delving deeply into the scenario where Donald Trump outperformed Kamala Harris.
Clearly, I hadn’t anticipated the result I got last week, as I passionately advocated for undecided viewers to cast their votes in favor of Vice President Harris, the Democratic candidate, during the show’s closing minutes.
On Tuesday, Trump was re-elected according to his statement made at the start of yesterday’s show, which drew boos from the crowd, and to be frank, that outcome wasn’t my personal preference. Interestingly, even in his victory speech, Trump himself appeared taken aback by it.
Later on during the HBO broadcast, a segment of Trump’s speech was played back. In this address, both the former president-elect and the incoming president stated, “We surmounted challenges that many deemed impossible, and it is now evident that we have accomplished something truly extraordinary in the political realm.” He continued with a tone of disbelief, “Just look at what has transpired. Doesn’t this seem unreal?
As a gamer, let me tell you, this situation is utterly mind-boggling! It’s like playing a game where I pull off an impossible move, and yet the other players decide to keep going with their current strategy. It just doesn’t add up!
Oliver remarked: “Despite Trump’s disheveled, off-the-cuff style being a key aspect of his persona, it remains astonishing to witness an incoming president deliver a victory speech as if he was an unaware best man making a toast. His words echoed something like this: ‘What a magnificent day! What a stunningly beautiful day we have today. My brother and his partner… I mean, wife, forgive me—today they… they accomplished what you all witnessed. I assumed my role was finished at the bachelor party, but here we are. Marriage is truly wild, isn’t it? It’s absolutely crazy.’
Oliver went on to note how it’s been a “rough week” in which “the tiniest moments this week, where the world was going on like nothing had happened could be suddenly enraging.” He cited examples such as text from a relative extending an invitation to Thanksgiving, The New York Times sending an alert about a recipe for roast chicken, and the Hello Kitty brand posting on X a word search puzzle with the caption, “Checking in … What are you looking forward to this month?”
Hey Hello Kitty, it’s not a good time for us to chat right now,” Oliver replied. “I’d really like to share something exciting with you, but I can’t seem to fit ‘drinking until I drop and enjoying some troublesome mac and cheese’ into your puzzle. Could you please leave me alone for a while?
It was observed that some X users expressed irritation over a video preview for Tyla’s new song, which featured someone buffing a derriere in denim shorts. This teaser was uploaded the day following the election and sparked reactions such as “not now girl. not now” and “Tyla reading the room,” accompanied by a Lea Michelle gif. Nevertheless, numerous others brought attention to the fact that the artist is South African, with one individual commenting: “She is literally South African… Despite Trump winning, nobody’s pleased, but what are you all expecting from her? She isn’t an American.
Hey there, I’ve got to say, it’s only fair. Folks from different parts of the world can enhance their denim cut-offs. It wasn’t them who landed us here. We made our own choices.
He went on: “And, and honestly, if you are watching this right now and thinking, you know what, I’m not actually ready for this either, I totally get it. It is understandable not to want yet another guy in a suit doom squawking at you. So if you are too angry, depressed or worried to watch the rest of this show, no problem. I have been in each of those places this week, and they are all a correct reaction because look, we did a show like this after the election in 2016 when no one expected Trump to win. This time, though, his winning felt like a real possibility all year long, lots of people mobilized to stop it, but it happened anyway, which feels somehow worse.”
