John Stewart in Undercover Gunfight: DCU ‘Lanterns’ Set Photos Leak!

The productions by James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios are running smoothly, as evidenced by recent developments. For instance, Superman is being edited following his appearance at CinemaCon this week, while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently in the midst of filming, on track for its June 2026 release date. In addition to feature films, the DC Universe is also expanding on the small screen, with Peacemaker Season 2 in post-production and Creature Commandos Season 2 given the green light. One of the most anticipated projects currently filming is Lanterns, an HBO series focusing on two Green Lanterns unraveling a murder mystery on Earth. Recently, new set photos for the show have been released, depicting one of the stars in a challenging predicament.

On X’s DC Film news account, images were shared by Ed Stanton, featuring Aaron Pierre (from Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart. In these photos, Stewart is seen engaged in an action scene, but instead of donning a traditional Green Lantern outfit, he appears to be dressed in a medical or service uniform, suggesting that he might be undercover for some mission. Another intriguing detail from the second image shows Pierre exiting a car while holding a gun, hinting that either Stewart doesn’t have his ring yet or can’t utilize it at this stage of the series.

It’s interesting that Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan isn’t present in this picture, sparking curiosity among fans. Some fans might be disappointed by the set photos showing John Stewart without using his power ring, but the creative team behind the series can reassure those who are unsure about the quality of the show.

‘Lanterns’ Looks Like a Grounded Take on Intergalactic Heroes

Chris Mundy, who has previously worked on hit shows like Ozark and True Detective in a producer and writer capacity, is now set to take up the role of showrunner for the series Lanterns. He will also be collaborating with exceptionally skilled writers such as Damon Lindelof and Tom King in writing this series. Lindelof is recognized for his work on HBO’s Watchmen, while Tom King is a highly acclaimed comic writer, known for his critically lauded runs on Mister Miracle, Batman, and Supergirl. The latter of these works will also serve as inspiration for the upcoming film Woman of Tomorrow.

The initial official image revealed earlier this year and these recent set photos suggest that the series Lanterns is evolving into a show with a more earthbound feel, despite its supernatural Green Lantern characters. King and Lindelof have demonstrated the ability to give depth to some of the most unrealistic characters in the DC universe. Consequently, it’s plausible that the Nebraska setting will provide a solid foundation for a story with a raw, realistic edge, even though the heroes hail from outer space.

Contrary to what the photos suggest, audiences can expect Green Lanterns to demonstrate their powers in the upcoming HBO series. To give a glimpse of this, Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman will highlight these powers, building anticipation for the show. As production progresses, we look forward to learning more about the series’ role within Gunn’s DCU.
