In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been some significant alterations to John Walker’s shield, as seen on screen, compared to its comic book counterpart. The character, portrayed by Wyatt Russell, reappeared in the MCU in a production now known by a different title, Thunderbolts. It’s been confirmed that Russell will reprise his role again in an upcoming film titled Avengers: Doomsday.
What John Walker’s Shield Isn’t Made of In Thunderbolts*
In the movie “Thunderbolts”, John Walker frequently utilized his reliable shield. Notably, the film suggests a key distinction regarding this shield compared to Walker’s comic-book counterpart – unlike the comic shield, which is made of Vibranium, the one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) does not possess that material.
In the comic books, Walker’s shield is crafted from Vibranium, much like Captain America’s shield. This material makes it incredibly tough, bordering on indestructible, a trait that was not present in Walker’s shield as depicted in Thunderbolts.
In the film Thunderbolts, several signs suggest that Walker’s shield is not constructed from Vibranium. To begin with, there are numerous scratches and gouges on the shield, which are evident at various points throughout the movie, although they are more noticeable in one of the film’s official posters.
On the poster, Walker’s emblem is prominently displayed with a close-up and excellent illumination, making the scratches stand out clearly. If Walker’s shield were made of Vibranium, it would likely have few to no such marks or scratches due to its exceptional durability.
This version attempts to maintain the original meaning while using more conversational language that is easy to understand.
The fact that Walker’s MCU shield was not made of Vibranium can be inferred from how it was bent during the fight between the Thunderbolts and Sentry. During the battle, Sentry effortlessly deformed Walker’s shield into a taco-like shape. If it had been Vibranium, it would have been much harder for Sentry to bend it so easily.
What Is John Walker’s MCU Shield Made Of?
Given that Thunderbolts revealed John Walker’s shield isn’t Vibranium, people might be curious about what it is actually crafted from. Since the shield can bend and get damaged, it seems unlikely it’s made of Adamantium, as this material is also known for its incredible durability.
Yet, as demonstrated in the work Thunderbolts, the shield appears to be extremely robust and lethal, capable of being maneuvered with ease without fear of it shattering or failing its purpose. This suggests that it might be constructed from a high-grade military metal alloy, implying that it can handle everyday situations effectively but may strain under excessive pressure.
John Walker had a Vibranium shield at some point in time, specifically during “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”. After Steve Rogers passed on the title of Captain America, the shield was handed to John Walker. However, this particular shield was then taken away from him by Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, with Sam now being the one who holds it as the new Captain America.
In the final moments of Episode 5 from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, we see that after losing his shield, Walker opted to craft a new one. This is evidenced in the post-credits scene where he’s depicted assembling the shield and adding personal touches with paint.
In Episode 6, we saw Walker employ his protective device against the Flag Smashers, yet due to its non-Vibranium composition, it sustained severe harm. The shield used by Walker in the Thunderbolts series was most likely self-made, making it similar to the one featured on the Disney+ show.
It’s plausible that he learned from his past errors with the Flag Smashers and opted for a tougher material instead. The shield in Thunderbolts, though still somewhat damaged, took a beating during a battle against Sentry. This suggests more about Sentry’s power than any shortcomings on Walker’s part when it comes to the shield’s durability.
