As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of industry experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the John Wick franchise has become nothing short of a modern-day action masterpiece. The series, spearheaded by the indomitable Keanu Reeves, has managed to carve out its own niche in the action genre, defying the trends set by juggernauts like Fast & Furious.
Over four films, the franchise established itself as a timeless action masterpiece, starring . As it marks its 10th anniversary and continues to grow, long-term producer Erica Lee discussed how not emulating the Fast & Furious style of action allowed the film to leverage its strengths and achieve success.
In an interview with MovieWeb, Lee reflected on the 10-year journey of the franchise, highlighting elements that contribute to its success and resonance with viewers. A key factor, as Lee pointed out, is that unlike the Fast & Furious movies, the original film lacked a crucial aspect it later became famous for, but instead relied on something else: an unwaveringly committed Keanu Reeves. During the conversation with Matt Mahler from MovieWeb, Lee emphasized this point.
What I’m getting at is, I believe the Wick movies succeed because, you see, in the first film, we didn’t have a large budget. This led people to think, ‘Oh, they don’t do car chases in New York.’ Well, of course, we can’t afford them and we couldn’t compete with what Fast and Furious does. Instead, we focused on our strong points. We had a leading actor who can ride a motorcycle, drive, perform his own stunts, and was willing to train for six months before shooting the movie. Not every movie has that kind of talent, and not every star is prepared to make that commitment. So, in essence, our strengths lie in these areas, and we capitalize on them.
Will Keanu Reeves Return for John Wick 5?
There’s been a lot of discussion among the stars and creators of the John Wick series about whether we’ll see Keanu Reeves reprise his role as the assassin who loves dogs again after his upcoming part in Ballerina. Despite director Chad Stahelski expressing little interest in continuing the story unless there’s a fresh plot that’s fitting for the character, Lee remains optimistic about potentially reuniting the team at some point down the line. She mentioned: “I hope we can ‘get the band back together’ again sometime in the future.
I often find myself yearning for the chance to reunite the band, as the shared experiences have been incredibly fulfilling, and our films resonate deeply with audiences, even shaping a genre. Deep within me, I harbor the hope that this isn’t the end. I believe there are still stories left untold. Naturally, we aim for excellence, requiring the story to be just right, along with perfect scenarios and details. Chad and Keanu have their own commitments outside of this, so timing is crucial. Ideally, all pieces should fall into place in a way that makes narrative sense. However, I remain optimistic that someday we’ll discover the film that brings us back together.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be reprising my role in the Ana de Armas-led film “Ballerina” on June 6, 2025. Beyond this exciting venture, it appears we must all exercise patience to discover what’s next from a franchise that has triumphed by staying true to its core and refraining from mimicking the success of other franchises.
