Johnny Depp Addresses Amber Heard Trial as ‘Modi’ Lands in San Sebastian: “We’ve All Been Through Things. Maybe Yours Didn’t Turn Into a Soap Opera”

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the fictional worlds of Hollywood and beyond, I can’t help but feel a peculiar sense of kinship with Johnny Depp as he navigates his real-life drama with the grace and wit of a seasoned actor. His life, much like many of the characters we play, has been filled with twists, turns, and the occasional soap opera-esque moment, all under the watchful eye of the public.

Johnny Depp arrived in San Sebastian accompanied by his “Modi” co-stars, and during a conversation, he playfully compared the media attention surrounding his personal separation from Amber Heard to a popular daytime television drama, referring to it as “a melodrama.

After making headlines in Hollywood due to his and Heard’s high-profile defamation case, the actor is set to unveil his second directorial project on the coast of Spain. The movie titled “Modi – Three Days on the Wings of Madness” offers a glimpse into several days from the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

At the press conference, Depp compared his tumultuous life to that of Modigliani’s, stating, “Each character I portray has their unique tale, as I’ve undeniably faced a multitude of situations. Not everyone’s life may have become a dramatic series like mine, broadcast on television.” This remark was followed by laughter from the crowd of reporters filling the room.

You know, we all navigate our own journeys. Witnessing these individuals on the brink of achieving their dreams… It stirs something deep within me. Reminiscing about my days in that cramped studio flat, nestled near the chaotic Hollywood Boulevard in a questionable neighborhood… Those were tough times, raw and unpolished, filled with oddities and challenges, yet they were exquisite.” (Laughs at the memories.)

In this movie, Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio plays the lead character, joined by Antonia Desplat, Al Pacino, and Stephen Graham. Set against the backdrop of Paris during World War II, the plot revolves around a painter and sculptor who struggles with his artistic independence, self-worth, and elitist attitudes as he seeks acknowledgment.

Depp said that the film came about through none other than Pacino, who suggested the Pirates of the Caribbean star direct a biopic on Modgliani. Depp did a gravelly impression of Pacino: “Hey, you remember that Modi thing I was on about a few years ago, I think you should direct it.” Depp added, “For some reason, they saw me driving this strange machine. I mean, when Pacino speaks, you must listen.”

The cast for Modi could only heap praise upon Johnny Depp prior to the film’s premiere. They frequently discussed his kind nature and creative talents on set, and Scamarcio and Desplat expressed to The Hollywood Reporter in San Sebastian that the industry should honor him.

In 1997, Johnny Depp first stepped into directing with the movie “The Brave”, and last year at the 2021 San Sebastian Film Festival, he was honored with the esteemed Donostia Award for his significant contributions to the film industry. Cate Blanchett and Spanish director Pedro Almodovar are set to receive this award in the year 2024.

This year, the San Sebastian Film Fest runs from Sept. 20-28.
