As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of cinema-watching under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Johnny Depp‘s latest venture, “Day Drinker,” has certainly piqued my interest. The pairing of Depp and his former co-star Penélope Cruz in a crime caper set on a cruise ship feels like an intriguing blend of their past collaborations, such as “Blow” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp continues his (somewhat controversial) comeback, with the actor landing his biggest role so far since legal proceedings with his ex-wife Amber Heard concluded in 2022. Depp has joined Lionsgate‘s Day Drinker and will star opposite his former Blow co-star in this crime caper set on a cruise ship.
The upcoming film titled “Day Drinker” will be helmed by director Marc Webb, renowned for his work on the Spider-Man series and the romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer. As reported by Deadline, this project is based on an original screenplay by Zach Dean. For a glimpse into the movie’s storyline, you can find its synopsis below.
A “Day Drinker” observes a bartender on a cruise ship encountering a secretive daily imbiber – a turn of events leading both individuals into the depths of a hidden criminal world, unveiling surprising connections between them.
In a new project, Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz will once again share the screen. They’ve worked together on films like “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express” in the past. However, contrary to initial reports, Sydney Sweeney from “Euphoria” will not be a part of this movie anymore.
Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate’s Film Division, lauded filmmaker Marc Webb and the two leading actors of “Day Drinker” in a declaration, expressing appreciation by stating:
In an extraordinary setting, the movie ‘Day Drinker’ blends a popular idea with unexpectedly bold plot developments, and there’s no director more suited for this task than Marc, nor two actors better suited to embody the characters than Johnny and Penélope.
Day Drinker Marks the First Major Studio Project for Johnny Depp Since Depp v. Heard
Title Drinker During the Day signals Johnny Depp’s inaugural venture with a major film studio after the high-profile legal disputes between him and his ex-wife, Amber Heard who is also known for her role as Mera in Aquaman. The legal battle between Depp and Heard dates back to 2019 when he lost a libel case against British tabloid The Sun, which labeled him a “domestic abuser.” This contentious trial culminated with Depp suing Heard for defamation following an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post in December 2018. In the end, the jury predominantly sided with Depp, granting him $10 million in compensatory damages and another $5 million in punitive damages.
During this phase, Johnny Depp found himself letting go of significant roles, including that of the antagonist Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series. The role was subsequently filled by Mads Mikkelsen, who portrayed him in 2022’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, a choice that some might argue was more fitting for the part.
I’m thrilled to share that Johnny Depp will soon take the director’s chair for the captivating biopic, “Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” This film is based on the compelling life story of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. In this production, Riccardo Scamarcio brilliantly portrays Modigliani, with Stephen Graham and Al Pacino delivering powerful performances as Maurice Gangnat and the same character, respectively. The movie premiered out of competition at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival in September.
