This article reveals plot points from the movie Karate Kid: Legends. The much-anticipated Karate Kid: Legends marked the return of the franchise to cinemas, following the resurgence it experienced during Netflix’s Cobra Kai series, which revisited characters from the iconic 80’s trilogy. The franchise had been dormant for some time after the unsuccessful 2010 remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. However, given the success of Cobra Kai, Karate Kid: Legends was produced to tap into nostalgia for the original films and link the 2010 film to its roots.
Despite generally mediocre reception in reviews, “Legends” boasted some strong elements, particularly the captivating performances by Ben Wang as Li Fong and Sadie Stanley as Mia Lipani. The duo displayed remarkable chemistry and truly added depth to their roles. However, it seemed that certain elements were missing which had contributed to the success of earlier “Karate Kid” productions. Although “Legends” drew several connections to its predecessors, one aspect in particular highlighted a noticeable gap.
Johnny Lawrence’s Cameo In Karate Kid: Legends Immediately Brings Some Humor
Johnny Was Hilarious In His Brief Scene
One of the most thrilling scenes in the movie Legends came when William Zabka’s character, Johnny Lawrence, made an appearance at the end and exchanged a few witty remarks with Ralph Macchio’s character, Daniel LaRusso. The film concluded with Victor and Li Nong sending a pizza to Daniel in California. This sweet gesture was then followed by Johnny proposing several humorous pizza-related jokes about a potential future business partnership. It seemed that they had both been contemplating starting a new venture, and Johnny’s initial idea for this joint endeavor was a pizzeria named “Miyagi-Dough.
Later on, Johnny devised some catchphrases and pizza-themed names for the hypothetical eatery, all of which were puns linking karate to pizza. Although individually, these quips might not have been particularly amusing, Zabka still excels as Johnny, making them significantly funnier than they should be. He was a riot in Cobra Kai, and although his screen time was limited in Legends, it demonstrated his ability to make the show such a hit.
Karate Kid: Legends’ Comedic Bits Are Hit & Miss
The Film’s Comedy Wasn’t That Great
In essence, Karate Kid: Legends is predominantly an action-packed film, with an emphasis on character interactions and thrilling fight sequences. However, there are some comical elements that are characteristic of the series. Unfortunately, these comedic aspects didn’t quite resonate as intended, although they did elicit a few chuckles. A particularly amusing scene is when Li and Mia almost kissed, only to be interrupted by Joshua Jackson’s character, Victor. He grumbled about being thrown off his game before his fight, which was a humorous touch and one of the rare instances that drew genuine laughter from the audience.
In Jackson’s performance at that time, it provided some humor, but it was one of the rare instances that generated a significant response. To put it another way, the comedy in Legends was scarcely used throughout the movie, but there were a few instances where the attempt at humor fell flat, such as when the music slowed and distorted during punchlines to events unfolding. Additionally, there were some jokes that seemed forced and unnecessary, making the overall comedic aspect of Legends rather average. This is particularly evident when compared to the funniest scenes in Cobra Kai.
Karate Kid: Legends Could’ve Used More Of Johnny Lawrence’s Comedy
He Could’ve Brought A Lot Of Life And Energy
Even though Johnny wasn’t destined to be a leading character in the movie, and adding him might have made it too crowded, his comedic touch at the end of Legends was something that the film seemed to miss. The action and character interactions were fantastic, forming the core of the movie, but Johnny’s brief appearance injected such energy and liveliness that it would’ve been wonderful to see more of his performance or humor style in Karate Kid: Legends.
