Joker 2’s Lady Gaga On Celebrating ‘Complex Female Characters’ With Her Version of Harley Quinn

As a gamer with a rich history of immersing myself in diverse narratives, I can confidently say that Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in Joker 2 is bound to be nothing short of extraordinary. Having witnessed her breathtaking performances in A Star is Born and House of Gucci, where she brought complex characters to life with such authenticity, I have no doubt she will do the same for Harley Quinn.

When it was announced that Lady Gaga would portray Harley Quinn in the upcoming “Joker 2” (Joker: Folie à Deux), it’s only natural to wonder what direction this iconic DC Comics character might take, given the teaser trailer’s depiction of Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix dancing to Frank Sinatra’s “Cheek to Cheek.” Would we see a traditional, maniacal Harley Quinn, or perhaps an entirely new interpretation? The actress herself addresses this curiosity by expressing her excitement about the intricate female character she will be bringing to life on the big screen in her third feature film.

In the sequel to Joker, titled simply as Joker 2, the story unfolds two years after the events of the first Todd Phillips movie. During this time, Arthur Fleck, the protagonist, encounters and falls in love with a musical therapist named Lee who mirrors his madness. Despite their characters progressing towards Joker and Harley Quinn, the original narratives delve into the intricacies of how they became the iconic figures we know today. At the premiere of the musical suspense film, Lady Gaga, donning a gown inspired by Harley Quinn and sporting matching makeup (as reported by Getty), expressed her enthusiasm for portraying “complex female characters” while promoting her role in the upcoming Joker sequel.

In every opportunity I get, I honor and portray women in unique and authentic ways. Particularly intricate female characters are captivating. However, when it came to Lee Quinzel, I aimed to make her distinctively mine and significant for this movie. It was crucial that she appeared genuine on screen. My hope is that when women attend the theater, they might recognize aspects of themselves in her, even as she exhibits a touch of unpredictability.

According to Lady Gaga’s statements, it seems we’re in store for a unique take on Harley Quinn unlike anything we’ve encountered before. Perhaps we’ll delve into her personal history that led her to Arkham State Hospital and uncover the reasons behind her shared interest in anarchy with Arthur Fleck.

In the trailer for the upcoming “Joker 2,” it’s clear that Joker’s right-hand woman is unlike any other character we’ve encountered in DC movies or shows before. The musical numbers she performs alongside Joaquin Phoenix are quite unusual in this genre, and the darkness of her character seems to delve deeper into psychological complexity rather than just being overtly aggressive. Just as the first “Joker” movie allowed us a glimpse into why Arthur Fleck resorted to violence, I have a strong feeling that we’ll also understand Lee’s motivation for staying by the side of a chaotic and destructive character like the Joker.

Harley Quinn isn’t the first multi-dimensional character that Lady Gaga has taken on; in fact, all the characters she’s portrayed have shades of gray instead of straightforward personalities. In her debut film, “A Star is Born”, it’s clear that Ally struggles with finding her way in the music industry through each heartfelt song in the movie. She yearns to create meaningful songs while still captivating audiences, sometimes at the cost of losing sight of herself. Additionally, she navigates a complex relationship with Jackson Maine, an alcoholic singer.

In the movie “House of Gucci,” the versatile actress plays a character who embodies both heroic and villainous traits, serving as an outsider driven by desires for love and achievement. However, she ultimately reaches her most sinister act, masterminding her husband’s murder. The intensity of this role was so profound for the American pop star-turned-actress that she sought counsel from a psychiatric nurse towards the end of filming to preserve her mental wellbeing. With every challenging character, Lady Gaga continues to leave critics and audiences in awe. It wouldn’t surprise me if she earned another Oscar nomination should she take on the role of Joker 2.
