'Joker: Folie à Deux' Box Office Stumble of $40 Million USD Opening Is No Laughing Matter

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic universes, I must say that the release of Joker: Folie à Deux feels like a bitter pill to swallow. With such high expectations and a powerhouse cast, this sequel seems to have missed its mark by a wide margin.

Warner Bros.’ wager on another DC Comics sequel, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, has failed to impress audiences. Despite earning the poorest rating yet for a comic book film, a “D” from CinemaScore, the movie’s disappointing $40 million USD opening weekend performance reflects the predominantly unfavorable audience reactions.

Over the weekend just passed, Deadline reported an assessment by a veteran in movie marketing about Warner Bros.’ approach to the Joker sequel: “This isn’t about ticket sales, it’s about creative issues.” With production costs over $190 million, the opening weekend earnings fell significantly short of projections at approximately $39 million. Warner Bros. reported an early Sunday morning update with a domestic total of $40 million. However, the studio anticipates that the film has earned around $80 million overseas, bringing its global debut to about $121.1 million. Despite this, it’s still not meeting the projected $140 million worldwide mark.

People who thought that “Joker: Folie à Deux” would bring in a lot of money were sadly wrong, as it had one of the smallest openings among sequels to major comic book film franchises, even falling below Marvel Studios’ flop from last fall with $46.1 million USD. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the lowest opening for a DC film; “Jonah Hex” from 2010 had an opening of just $5.3 million USD. By the end of its first weekend, “Joker: Folie à Deux” earned $20 million USD during previews but dropped by 45% to $11.4 million USD on Saturday. Despite the star power of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, their limited promotion for the film and interaction with fans didn’t help its performance. As the movie continues to play in theaters, we’ll have to wait and see how it will perform moving forward.
