As someone who has always been intrigued by the enigmatic and complex nature of the Joker character, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when “Joker: Folie à Deux” was finally released on Max. Having missed its theatrical run due to other commitments, I was eager to see what all the fuss was about.
After making its premiere on Max last Friday, is now gathering a following. The second installment, which features and Lady Gaga, was met with widespread criticism upon its October theatrical release, disappointing many moviegoers and receiving negative reviews from both critics and audiences.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that blockbusters like Deadpool and Wolverine typically require a four-month journey before they find their home on streaming platforms. However, remarkably, the Joker sequel has already landed on Max and HBO, only two months after its release. It seems Warner Bros. Discovery is banking on this swift arrival to catch the attention of viewers during the Christmas season, offering a refreshing change from the plethora of holiday-themed movies that usually flood streaming services at this time of year.
Currently, it appears that the strategy has proven successful, as “Joker: Folie à Deux” has managed to surpass “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” on HBO’s chart, claiming the top position. Whether it maintains this spot is still uncertain, but given the film’s disappointing box office performance, many will likely be eager to determine if the criticism it received was warranted.
‘Joker 2’ Continues to Confound and Annoy on Streaming
It seems that people who are now watching Joker: Folie à Deux on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film still has a 32% audience rating, share the same discontent with Todd Phillips’ sequel as those who saw it in theaters initially… except for those who adore musicals. One critic even expressed strong dissatisfaction by saying:
“That film was truly terrible! I can’t believe I wasted two precious hours of my life… It’s absurd! You’re joking, right? The movie’s title is ‘Joker,’ and yet there’s no Joker in it? Incredulous!
In simpler terms, this review can be described as relatively restrained. It’s true that tastes differ greatly, and some people found the sequel to be satisfying. However, many new viewers feel relieved that they didn’t spend money on watching the movie in the cinema.
“Todd Phillips, the director of this crap show should never direct again. How do you ruin “The Joker”. Lady Gaga was downright irritating, and an she is an atrocious actress. Trying to turn “The Joker” into a two bit musical was a terrible choice by the director. It’s like they were trying to irritate the audience. Hey, at least I didn’t pay to see this in the theater, and could skip the ridiculously bad singing. Folly Le Pew!”
Following the 2019 premiere of “Joker”, Phillips was frequently questioned about a potential sequel. At that point, he strongly believed that Joaquin Phoenix’s exceptional and unconventional portrayal of “The Joker” would be a standalone performance. If Warner Bros. Discovery had agreed to this, the iconic character’s image might not have been tarnished by this year’s poorly received sequel, which has become the target of jokes.
