Joker: Folie Deux Director Says One Scene in 2019's Joker Revealed Arthur Fleck's Reveal

As a dedicated fan of Todd Phillips’ Joker universe, I find myself intrigued by the director’s recent statements regarding the identity of the Joker. While many have been left bewildered and disgruntled by the revelation that Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is not “The” Joker, I must admit, I saw it coming all along.

The new revelation about Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck, not being “The” Joker in the latest release has left many fans upset, as they feel it contradicts the storyline of the 2019 film Joker. However, the director argues that this twist was already hinted at in the original movie, specifically in a scene that seems to have been overlooked by viewers in their haste to criticize the new sequel.

In my conversation with IGN about the film, Phillips emphasized that his Joker movies wouldn’t focus on Gotham’s Clown Prince. Moreover, I had initially intended to create just one movie and wasn’t giving much thought to Arthur Fleck’s future beyond the 2019 Oscar-winning masterpiece. However, he underscored that for those who watched Joker, the scene where the character met a young Bruce Wayne made it clear that this was not the same Joker that Batman would encounter in years to come. He put it simply: “The scene indicates that the character isn’t destined to become the villain that Batman will battle later on.

One point often left unclear in the initial film was this: “Many found themselves puzzled. ‘How can the Joker, who appears older than Bruce Wayne, make sense? If he’s a geriatric Joker, how could he engage in future battles?’

Phillips elaborated on the fact that the initial film’s plot itself laid the groundwork for the shocking twist that left numerous viewers stunned over the weekend. In other words, he explained that the script had been carefully crafted to set up the unexpected turn of events.

Have you ever read the script for the initial movie titled ‘Joker’? It’s important to note that the film isn’t simply named ‘The Joker,’ but rather ‘Joker.’ Also, in the script, it was always referred to as an ‘origin story,’ not ‘THE origin story.’

So, Who Was the Real Joker in Todd Phillips’ Movies?

As a passionate fan, I must admit that it doesn’t bother me either way who the real Joker is in Todd Phillips’ universe. Some fans have been disappointed to find out that Arthur Fleck, the man we’ve watched transform into the Joker across two films, isn’t exactly the character they imagined. However, Todd Phillips has wisely kept the true identity of the Joker a tantalizing enigma in his world, leaving us guessing and eager for more.

In further discussion about Arthur Fleck’s character from the initial film, director Phillips stated that it wouldn’t make sense for him to possess the necessary qualities to become the cunning arch-nemesis that Gotham’s protector, Batman, often faces. Phillips further explained:

In Arthur, Joaquin’s portrayal of The Joker, our interpretation differs significantly from a typical criminal mastermind. This has been consistent since the initial movie, and if we hadn’t made a sequel, people could speculate about what might become of this character, but he would never embody the Joker we remember from our childhood. I hope that makes sense to you. Essentially, Arthur is not that version of The Joker we’re all familiar with.

In the movie “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Arthur meets his end at the hands of another inmate, who mimics Heath Ledger’s Joker from “The Dark Knight” by self-inflicting wounds on his face. However, this new character probably isn’t “The” Joker as we know him. Unfortunately, due to poor box office performance and mixed reviews from viewers and critics alike, it seems that the authentic portrayal of The Joker in this specific Elseworlds segment of the DC universe is no more. For those who didn’t anticipate this turn of events, it appears that they were the ones fooled in the end.
