I’m thrilled to share that I’m back in the MCU, stepping once more into the boots of Frank Castle in the fourth episode of Daredevil: Born Again. However, it might surprise you to know that initially, I hadn’t planned to reprise my role as The Punisher in Marvel Studios’ original version of Born Again. But with a creative overhaul addressing some significant issues, I found myself drawn back. Frank Castle was a standout during Marvel’s Netflix era, making his debut in Season 2 of Daredevil before starring in his own series for two seasons.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jon Bernthal shared his concerns about Marvel’s initial plans for The Punisher in the MCU. During discussions for Daredevil: Born Again, when Matt Corman and Chris Ord were showrunners, Dario Scardapane was later brought on as a new showrunner in late 2023 to revamp the series. Bernthal has now disclosed that the original concept did not capture the true essence of Frank’s character, stating:
I was curious to find out if this would work. I wanted to see if there was genuine eagerness and a craving to allow Frank to be his authentic self, which is complex and intense enough to shun the audience and create something challenging, psychologically intricate, and devoid of any cuteness or humor. Essentially, I didn’t get a chance to witness it.
In the end, according to Bernthal, his decision to step back from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s semi-reboot was driven by a desire to cater to the fans and act as he believed was necessary.
He stated that he hadn’t encountered the portrayal of Frank that was presented, and he found it hard to comprehend their intentions towards Frank. Moreover, he felt that it wouldn’t resonate with fans and didn’t align with his vision. In simpler terms, he expressed that it wasn’t an opportunity he was particularly drawn to or eager to pursue.
Jon Bernthal Was Heavily Involved in The Punisher’s Return After ‘Born Again’ Overhaul
Yet, Bernthal disclosed that during the artistic renovation, he was called back to aid in the creation of Frank Castle’s narrative for the series “Born Again“. In his own words:
1. They actively involved me in the discussion. We delved deeply into Frank’s psychological and physical states.
2. They made sure I was part of the dialogue. We took a close look at what mental and physical state Frank is currently in.
3. They ensured I was included in the talk. We examined Frank’s emotional and bodily condition thoroughly.
4. They pulled me into the discussion. We scrutinized where exactly Frank stands psychologically and physically.
5. They drew me into the conversation. We explored the specifics of Frank’s psychological and physical position.
In essence, Frank Castle’s reappearance in “Daredevil: Born Again” seemed as if he had never left us. From Jon Bernthal’s riveting portrayal of the tormented vigilante to the character’s murky morality and intricate sense of justice, it perfectly encapsulated what fans yearned for in his return. Consequently, anticipation is sky-high for the forthcoming Disney+ special that promises to once again shine a light on Frank Castle.
Details concerning The Punisher’s specific storyline are kept under wraps at Marvel Studios, as it is expected to align closely with his character development during the initial season of Daredevil: Born Again. Regardless of what Frank Castle may be involved in until then, Bernthal assures that the special episode will faithfully portray The Punisher. He hinted, “There’s a lot more to come for The Punisher, but you can trust that we will stay true to his character.
We’re putting maximum effort into creating a story about Frank Castle. This won’t be an easy or light-hearted tale, but one that stays true to his character. I feel incredibly fortunate and thankful for this chance, as I believe it’s the right approach for this character.
