Jon Bernthal Joins Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Jon Bernthal has featured in multiple Marvel TV shows, portraying the unyielding avenger called The Punisher, and was the lead character in a separate series.

Now he’s taking his guns to the big screen.

Michael Bernthal has signed on to work alongside Tom Holland in “Spider-Man: Fresh Start,” the upcoming Spider-Man film from Sony and Marvel Studios. Destin Daniel Cretton is leading the production, which will be filmed in England this coming summer and is set for a release date of July 31, 2026.

A significant portion of the film still holds many unanswered questions. Various online speculations about the movie suggest that more than a dozen potential antagonists could make an appearance, ranging from criminal masterminds to extraterrestrial parasites. Additionally, there seem to be multiple variations of the Hulk that might feature in the film as well.

At this point, it’s certain that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will reprise their roles as MJ and Ned respectively, though the extent of these roles has yet to be determined. The latest cast addition is Sadie Sink from ‘Stranger Things’. The plot unfolds post the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, where it was revealed that Peter Parker was Spider-Man, only for this secret to be erased again.

With Bernthal playing The Punisher, it suggests a more realistic approach to the story since his character originates from the rough streets of Marvel’s universe and typically relies on physical combat using fists, knives, and firearms instead of magic or advanced technology when dealing with villains. However, imagine how exciting it would be if he faced off against the rampaging Hulk!

Initially, Jon Bernthal made an appearance as the vigilante Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, within Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix. Later, he headlined his own two-season show. Lately, he reappeared for several episodes in the Disney+ revival of Daredevil titled “Born Again.

I’m thrilled as a fan to learn that Marvel has big plans for The Punisher and Jon Bernthal in the near future! We can expect The Punisher to make a comeback in season two of “Born Again,” and there’s even a standalone Punisher feature on Disney+ in the works, with Bernthal penning it himself. What’s intriguing is that when he agreed to reprise his role as Daredevil, one condition he set was preserving the raw, R-rated essence of the character. It’ll be fascinating to observe how this gritty edge aligns with the family-friendly vibe of the Spider-Man films.

Bernthal and Holland share a special bond in the Marvel universe, having worked together prior to their roles. During preparations for their respective Marvel auditions, they were collaborating on the 2017 film “Pilgrimage.” Instead of competing, they supported each other by assisting with their audition videos.

This year, Bernthal has been featured on the big screen alongside Ben Affleck in “The Accountant 2” for Amazon, as well as in the suspenseful film “The Amateur,” co-starring Rami Malek, for 20th Century Fox.

Bernthal is repped by CAA and Sloane Offer.
