Jon Bernthal to Return in ‘Punisher’ Special for Marvel and Disney+

Jon Bernthal is returning for more punishment.

The actor is set to play the character of Frank Castle, also known as the antihero ‘Punisher’, once again in a Marvel TV exclusive, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.

Jon Bernthal is currently collaborating with Reinaldo Marcus Green on a separate special project, and Green will also be directing. This upcoming Disney+ series is set to premiere in the year 2026, coinciding with the second season of Daredevil. The first season of Daredevil: Born Again, featuring Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, will be available on Disney+ starting March 4.

Initially, Bernthal portrayed the role of a grieving father transformed into a vigilante in Netflix’s adaptation of “Daredevil”, introducing the character during the second season that premiered in 2016. Later, he starred in his own Netflix series as the main character for two seasons from 2017 to 2019, continuing the storyline of “The Punisher”.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m stoked about the latest news that Jon Bernthal, my favorite character from “The Walking Dead,” is once again teaming up with Marvel for the Punisher special. Can’t wait to see what he brings to this iconic role!

By September 2023, the highly anticipated series of Daredevil titled “Born Again” was revamped following a disappointing response to initial previews. The original plan for an 18-episode series was significantly altered by Marvel Studios due to the footage not meeting their expectations.

In a 2016 conversation with THR, Bernthal discussed his introduction of the character and its significance to Marvel Comics enthusiasts. He first brought the renowned comic book hero into play in the season-two premiere of Netflix’s Daredevil. As Hell’s Kitchen turns into a battlefield for what appears to be an army fighting against street gangs with heavy weaponry, Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) soon discovers that it’s actually just one man on a personal mission of vengeance. In the opening scene, Matt dons his Daredevil costume to hunt down and neutralize the individual whom the city has dubbed the Punisher; however, he swiftly realizes that he may have encountered a formidable adversary.

The Punisher holds immense significance to countless individuals, permeating various minds, which is why it’s so deeply cherished. This emotional investment means a lot to me, and I empathize with it. I’ve had experience with the comic book community through my work on The Walking Dead; they are highly intelligent, devoted, and impassioned. Remarkably, this character also strikes a chord with law enforcement and military personnel. Soldiers even carry the Punisher symbol into battle on their gear, vehicles, and sometimes give their lives for their country while wearing it.
