Jonathan Groff to Star in Bobby Darin Musical On Broadway

As a seasoned theater enthusiast with a penchant for musicals that leave me breathless and teary-eyed, I can hardly contain my excitement about Jonathan Groff gracing the Broadway stage once again! The prospect of witnessing him embody the enigmatic Bobby Darin is simply thrilling.

Jonathan Groff will return to Broadway this season in the new musical Just in Time.

In the upcoming series, Tony Award-winning actor Ben Platt, who was recognized for his performance in last season’s Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along, will take on the role of Bobby Darin, the famed singer and composer behind hits such as “Beyond the Sea,” “Mack the Knife,” and “Splish Splash” among others. Platt is also involved in the production of this project, collaborating with Tom Kirdahy, Robert Ahrens, and John Frost.

Starting March 28, 2025, the show overseen by Alex Timbers (known for “Beetlejuice” and “Here Lies Love”) will start its previews at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The opening night is scheduled for April 3rd. At present, this theater is hosting a temporary run of “Romeo + Juliet”, which is due to close on Feb 16th.

As a thrilled audience member, I’m excited to announce that tonight marks the first-ever performance of the captivating production, “Just in Time.” This remarkable piece boasts a script penned by Warren Leight, the talented mind behind “Side Man,” and Isaac Oliver, whose work includes “Intimacy Idiot.” The choreography is expertly handled by Shannon Lewis. This play, brimming with a live, on-stage big band and a cast of 16, is an original concept brought to life by Ted Chapin.

Bobby Darin was a radiant star who left his mark on every facet of entertainment, but it was when he performed before an audience that his immense skill, charm, and genius truly shone. This intense, passionate connection with the crowd serves as the basis for our show’s concept,” Groff explained. “Alex Timber’s unique talent for creating a memorable theater experience and Bobby’s distinctive musical style, combined with his short, fiery existence, make Broadway the ideal setting to explore the story and spirit of this extraordinary talent who only came along once in a lifetime.

Beyond his portrayal of Franklin Shepard in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along,” opposite Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, Groff was nominated for a Tony Award for his roles as King George in “Hamilton” and Melchior in “Spring Awakening.” He has also been featured in television shows such as “Mindhunter,” “Looking,” and “Glee,” and can be seen in films like “Frozen,” “Frozen II,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” and “Knock at the Cabin.
