As a long-time Marvel fan, I must say I find myself at a crossroads with this latest development. On one hand, I am heartbroken to see Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror being replaced by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, especially after the promising start he had in the MCU. However, as a realist who has seen the power of second chances and redemption in Marvel stories, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of hope.
After a while, Jonathan Majors has openly discussed his feelings about his character, Kang the Conqueror, being supplanted by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Originally, Majors’ Kang was intended to be the main antagonist in Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga, first appearing in Loki and later starring as the principal villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania before taking the lead in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, following Majors’ conviction on two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault, Marvel Studios decided to part ways with the actor and pursue a new direction. At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, serving as the primary antagonist in the upcoming Avengers films, while The Kang Dynasty has been rebranded as Avengers: Doomsday.
In response to the announcement that Doctor Doom will replace Kang, played by Kang in previous roles, and with Robert Downey Jr. cast as the lead, Majors expressed his feelings to TMZ through Variety. “I’m heartbroken, of course,” he admitted, “but I do love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked, though.” When TMZ brought up Downey Jr.’s past as Iron Man, Majors defended him, stating that he deserves patience, curiosity, and love, as well as the opportunity to create at a high level. When asked if he would like to reprise his role as Kang in the MCU someday, Majors was quick to respond affirmatively.
Absolutely! Absolutely! I’m utterly fond of Kang. If it’s what the fans desire and Marvel approves, then let’s get this show on the road! Yes, indeed!
Avengers: Doomsday
opens in theaters on May 1, 2026.
