Joseph Kosinski Was A Great Choice For Top Gun: Maverick, But If Things Had Gone Differently The Movie Would Have Had A Bigger Connection To Tony Scott

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in both the virtual and real-world cinematic universes, I can confidently say that Top Gun: Maverick was a triumphant return to form for the franchise. However, if I were to play the “what-if” game, I’d have loved to see Ridley Scott at the helm.

It’s challenging to find fault with the success of “Top Gun: Maverick.” The sequel has raked in a billion dollars worldwide and garnered multiple award nominations. Looking back, it seems that every decision, from casting to hiring Joseph Kosinski, the director of “Tron: Legacy,” was spot on. It’s hard to conceive how the movie could have been improved, though perhaps if Ridley Scott, Tony Scott’s brother who directed the original “Top Gun,” had directed it instead, it might have been even better.

It’s understandable why the creators of “Top Gun: Maverick” might have extended an offer to Ridley Scott, considering directing the sequel to his brother’s iconic movie. Given that it would have been symbolic to maintain a familial connection in the project, Scott declined the opportunity. In an interview with THR, Scott shared that he rejected the position because “Top Gun: Maverick” didn’t align with his preferred film genre, as he and his brother had distinct tastes. Ridley Scott elaborated…

As a passionate admirer, I was asked to take on the role of director, yet I hesitantly declined, expressing my reluctance to tread in my brother’s footsteps. However, Tony had an entirely different perspective; he found solace in the here and now. Much of what I create encompasses historical events, fantastical realms, or futuristic sceneries. Fantasy, though, was not Tony’s cup of tea – films like Alien, Blade Runner, or Legend were not his preference. Incidentally, Legend didn’t receive widespread acclaim, but Tim Curry’s performance in it was nothing short of remarkable.

Without a doubt, Tony Scott and Ridley Scott don’t tend to create similar types of films. Among Tony Scott’s impressive body of work, his initial feature film, “The Hunger“, was the only genre movie he directed; it was a vampire flick starring David Bowie. Following that, all of Tony Scott’s films had compelling stories, but they were all set in contemporary real-world settings.

Compared to his more contemporary films like “Thelma and Louise,” which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director, Ridley Scott’s body of work tends to be less grounded in reality. Interestingly, despite being offered the film due to his relationship as Tony Scott’s brother, Ridley chose not to direct the “Top Gun” sequel. It is suggested that he turned it down because he wanted to maintain a certain distance from a project that was following in his brother’s footsteps, which he may have found challenging. Ridley is also said to have dismissed the film after seeing it.

In simpler terms, Scott earned extra points by complimenting one of Tim Curry’s standout performances in the fantasy film “Legend”, a movie where Ridley Scott previously directed Tom Cruise. It would have been exciting to witness another collaboration between them, especially since both Cruise and Tony Scott found success with this movie.

There’s no dispute that Joseph Kosinski, who directed the movie, did an outstanding job. Regarding Ridley Scott, there might have been improvements had he taken on the project. Yet, if for some reason Kosinski can’t work on Top Gun 3, another director could potentially step in.
