Josh Brolin Is Now Set To Make His First Stephen King Movie, And The Part Is A Perfect Fit

As a fanatic follower of both pop culture and the enigmatic world of Stephen King, I can hardly contain my excitement for Josh Brolin’s venture into the realm of King adaptations with his role in “The Running Man” remake. His versatility as an actor, ranging from charming to chilling, makes him a perfect fit for this dark and twisted tale.

From The Goonies to Coen brothers movies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Josh Brolin has left footprints in just about every area of pop culture, but here’s an interesting piece of trivia for you: he’s never been in a Stephen King adaptation before. That’s a bit odd given the breadth of his work… but that is a wrong that is soon to be righted, as the actor has landed a key role in one of the most anticipated upcoming King projects: he’s set to play the villain in Edgar Wright’s developing remake of The Running Man.

According to Deadline, we learn that Josh Brolin has been chosen to portray the formidable executive of the movie’s title reality show. In the book, this character is named Dan Killian, but it’s not confirmed if he’ll keep that name in the film. This casting decision is fantastic as Brolin possesses the acting range to convey both a commanding, menacing persona and a charming, toothy grin for the antagonist role.

The upcoming film, titled “The Running Man,” is inspired by a book released under Stephen King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman in 1982. Unlike the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the new production aims to closely follow the grim original storyline. In this adaptation, Glenn Powell will play Ben Richards, a man who finds himself in dire straits financially, trying to support his wife and ill child. In a desperate move, he agrees to participate in one of the government-run reality shows broadcast by a popular TV network, and is chosen for their top-rated show.

In the reality show “The Running Man,” Ben finds himself transformed into a globally sought-after fugitive. Not only does he have trained hunters pursuing him, but the show’s audience is incentivized to provide tips that result in his capture and execution. The longer he manages to evade them, the greater the financial reward for his family after his death.

Besides Josh Brolin and Glenn Powell, the film will also feature Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, and Karl Glusman as stars. Edgar Wright and Michael Bacall, who previously worked together on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, are teaming up to pen the adaptation of a Stephen King novel.

2024 has been a bustling year for Brolin, with him reprising his role as Royal Abbott in the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s Outer Range and appearing in Dune: Part 2 and the comedy Brothers alongside Peter Dinklage. Additionally, he is set to feature in The Running Man, and his future projects include Rian Johnson’s latest Benoit Blanc mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, as well as Zach Cregger’s sequel to 2022’s successful horror film Barbarian, titled Weapons.

The production for the upcoming movie is slated to start by year’s end, and it’s been confirmed that the film, titled “The Running Man,” will have a cinematic premiere on November 21, 2025. This is one of at least three Stephen King adaptations scheduled for release next year – the others being “The Monkey” directed by Osgood Perkins and “The Life Of Chuck” by Mike Flanagan.
