As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with a penchant for blockbuster movies, I must admit my excitement at the prospect of Josh Brolin joining the ranks of Green Lantern was palpable. His portrayal of Thanos and Cable, among other roles, has proven his aptitude for embodying complex characters in the genre. However, it seems fate has other plans, as he’s decided against taking on the role of Hal Jordan.
Josh Brolin will not be wearing the ring, after all.
Reports from The Hollywood Reporter indicate that the actor has declined an opportunity to play a role in the upcoming DC Studios series, “Lanterns,” which is inspired by the Green Lanterns superhero.
Actor Brolin has been tapped for the role of Hal Jordan, the self-assured Green Lantern character who was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the unsuccessful 2011 film “Green Lantern.” According to various reports, Brolin received an offer at the end of August. By the close of this past weekend, he had made his decision. Further details are not yet disclosed.
The upcoming eight-episode series, titled Lanterns, boasts a distinguished lineage with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner, who is also known for his work on Ozark. Collaborating with him in the writing process are Damon Lindelof, creator of HBO’s hit series Watchmen and renowned TV show Lost, as well as Tom King, a recipient of the Eisner Award for his work in comics. Currently, the team is in the process of hiring directors and casting actors. The production plans to film from January to June next year in Atlanta.
Brolin’s latest role would have added another comic book credit to his portfolio. He is well-versed in the genre, with notable performances as Thanos in James Gunn’s Marvel Cinematic Universe films “Guardians of the Galaxy,” as well as in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” directed by the Russo Brothers. Additionally, he portrayed Cable in “Deadpool 2,” alongside Reynolds, who also poked fun at his own “Green Lantern” movie in a post-credits scene.
There was a lot of excitement on the internet about Brolin potentially taking on the role of Jordan, but he wasn’t definitively chosen. Rumors swirled around other big-name actors as well, though it’s uncertain how accurate those reports are. Contrary to some rumors, Matthew McConaughey won’t be wearing the ring, according to reliable sources.
The story revolves around the character of Lanterns, which carries a gritty atmosphere similar to True Detective. Jordan, a veteran Lantern, finds himself in the mentoring role for John Stewart, one of DC Comics’ earliest Black superheroes. The plot unfolds as these two characters delve into an Earth-bound murder case that seems to have far-reaching consequences. Reports suggest that the producers are keen on casting a relatively new and youthful actor for the part opposite a more established name in the role.
