Josh Brolin Reportedly Offered Hal Jordan Role in Green Lantern Series

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for superheroes and a soft spot for Josh Brolin’s acting prowess, I find myself quite excited about the potential casting of our beloved Thanos as Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns. The idea of Brolin essaying an older, wiser version of Jordan, who could mentor a younger Jon Stewart, is intriguing and presents an opportunity to explore the complexities of these iconic characters.

In the upcoming “Green Lantern” series within James Gunn’s DC Universe, there are strong indications that a seasoned actor from the superhero genre is being considered for the lead role. This series, called “Lanterns,” is being produced by Damon Lindelof, who created HBO’s “Watchmen.” The characters Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart are expected to star as the main heroes in this DC Studios drama. Recently, there have been whispers that Josh Brolin, known for playing Thanos, might be approached for the role of the classic DC Comics character, Hal Jordan, also known as Green Lantern.

Based on information from industry insider Jeff Sneider, it appears that Josh Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan in Green Lantern. At this point, it’s reported that Brolin hasn’t accepted the offer, but given his success in Avengers: Endgame, he seems primed to step into the role. It’s important to note that this is a rumor for now, though the timing of the report suggests official news might be forthcoming. As for Jon Stewart, there’s no word yet, but it’s expected that DC Studios will cast someone relatively young, perhaps in their mid-to-early 20s, to play the role.

Sneider also mentions that Nathan Fillion, who’s set to play Guy Gardner in ‘Superman’, is expected to continue his role in ‘Lanterns’. Furthermore, it’s rumored that Stephen Williams, known for his exceptional work on ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Westworld’, could be the director for ‘Lanterns’. Given his past collaborations with Lindelof (including ‘Lost’), HBO finds him a strong contender for the job. If true, an intriguing aspect is that they might go for an older Hal Jordan who could potentially guide a younger and less experienced Jon Stewart in ‘Lanterns’.

In a new development, it appears that Josh Brolin is set to portray an older, weathered version of Hal Jordan. The series, titled “Lanterns,” will revolve around a space-partnered cop storyline, with Earth serving as its base but having far-reaching consequences for the broader DC Universe. This HBO original production is set to return the distinctive, thematic style of Damon Lindelof, following his exceptional work on the series “Watchmen.” He’ll be working alongside Chris Mundy, the showrunner from “Ozark,” who will also contribute to the scriptwriting along with acclaimed comic book writer Tom King. When the project was initially announced, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, made this statement (as reported by Variety):

“We’re excited to introduce this iconic DC comic book series on HBO, with Chris, Damon, and Tom leading the production. Characters like John Stewart and Hal Jordan, who are among DC’s most captivating figures, come alive in this unique detective story set within our upcoming summer lineup of the unified DC Universe, which includes Superman.”

The “Lanterns” television series will span eight episodes and has an official tagline: “Two cosmic law enforcers are drawn into a sinister, American-rooted mystery while investigating a murder in the heartland.” If Brolin is indeed Hal Jordan, it could mean a younger Jon Stewart might serve as the primary Green Lantern of the DCU. Some fan choices for Jon Stewart include Damson Idris (from “Snowfall” and “F1”) and Aaron Pierre (from “Rebel Ridge” and “Mufasa: The Lion King”), but recent reports suggest they may be too old for this role. However, given the impressive team behind the scenes of “Lanterns,” it won’t be long before official cast members are announced.
