As a seasoned cinema devotee with a penchant for superhero sagas and a soft spot for well-crafted villains, I find myself deeply invested in the enigmatic journey of Josh Brolin. His portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has left an indelible mark on my cinematic memories.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about Josh Brolin potentially revisiting the role of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, for him to return, the character must align with his vision and preferences. An Academy Award nominee known for his exceptional portrayals of iconic villains like Cable from Deadpool 2 and Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Brolin shared in a recent interview with Collider what conditions need to be met for him to appear again, possibly in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
“I’m not kidding — There’s a thing with playing Thanos. It’s like, ‘Oh, they’re gonna bring Thanos back.’ It’s like Sicario; it has to be right. It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift, and we should be talking about Deadpool 4. But we go back and forth. Again, it’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back. I would do anything that the Russos wanted me to do.”
Following their remarkable contributions to films like Infinity War, Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War, Anthony and Joe Russo have been assigned the significant duty of directing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
It’s not surprising that Brolin remains so devoted to the filmmakers, given how much he cherishes his experiences working with the Russo brothers as he unleashed chaos as Thanos in Marvel. Yet, when asked if he’d been contacted to reprise the role again, Brolin remained tight-lipped – all he did was cough, which doesn’t reveal much.
Josh Brolin Reveals His Favorite Memory from Avengers: Endgame
It turns out Josh Brolin won’t be part of the Green Lantern Corps in the DCU. However, his impact on the comic book world is undeniable due to his powerful portrayal of Thanos. Interestingly, some fans might find it intriguing to learn about Brolin’s fondest memory from filming Avengers: Endgame, considering the dramatic fate of his character in that movie. In an interview with GQ, Brolin shared more details about this special moment on set.
In the moment when I shared a scene with familiar faces like Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle, we performed together. On this occasion, I was lying down while the cameras were focused on me. Off-camera, I looked at Ruffalo, but in that instant, I blanked on my line. So, I asked him, “What’s my next line?” as if he would remember since it’s a different character and actor [I laughed]. But he just looked back at me and said, “I don’t know.
In the initial sequence of “Endgame,” Brolin’s character lost his head to Thor, who was brandishing Stormbreaker at the time. However, he didn’t stop there – he went on narrating his tale nonetheless.
In a different phrasing, “I said, ‘You need to understand what this is. What is it? I can’t quite place it yet…’ I had a feeling it was about to happen. And there, Chris [Hemsworth] was uttering something, holding up this massive object as if wielding Stormbreaker. I asked, ‘What’s the line here?’ Remarkably, Mark Ruffalo provided me with the dialogue. That moment remains my favorite from working on that movie, and I couldn’t help but be amazed by how he remembered his lines so well. He’s truly one of the kindest and most generous people you could ever meet.
If Brolin chooses to reprise his role as Thanos, there’s no doubt that there are many more memorable moments to come. The return of the Russo brothers as directors for both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could help steer the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new direction, following significant contributions from Deadpool & Wolverine this year. However, it’s the stunning comeback of Robert Downey Jr., who will play Doctor Doom in future films, that has sparked optimism for Marvel’s upcoming movies and generated an electric excitement among fans.
